When President-elect Donald Trump is sworn into office on Jan. 20, he will become the richest president in U.S. history. Forbes estimates Trump’s net worth at around $3.7 billion.
Based on a list compiled by 24/7 Wall St., here are the previous top 10 richest U.S. presidents, adjusted for inflation.
Coming in at No. 10 is John F. Kennedy, whose net worth was $1 billion. Kennedy ranks at the bottom of the top 10 because while the family fortune tops any other U.S. president’s wealth, he didn’t directly own it since it was shared in a trust with other family members.
No. 9 is Franklin D. Roosevelt, with a net worth of $66 million, and much of his wealth was inherited.
No. 8 is Bill Clinton, whose net worth is around $75 million. However, Clinton made the bulk of his fortune from speeches and book deals after he left office.
No. 7 is Herbert Hoover, with a net worth of $82 million. He made his fortune as a mining company executive and accumulated valuable holdings in several mining companies.
No. 6 is Lyndon B. Johnson, with a net worth of $108 million. Johnson inherited a small piece of land in Texas and built it up into the 1,500-acre ranch that became known as the Texas White House.
No. 5 is James Madison, with a net worth of $112 million. The fourth president’s fortune came from real estate after he inherited land from his father.
No. 4 is Andrew Jackson, with a net worth of $131 million. Jackson became wealthy from land speculation and was one of three investors who founded Memphis.
No. 3 is Theodore Roosevelt, with a net worth of $138 million. The 26th president was born into a wealthy New York City family and made money from valuable real estate.
No. 2 is Thomas Jefferson, with a net worth of $234 million. Like other presidents, he also inherited a real estate fortune.
And the No. 1 spot goes to…
Our nation’s first president, George Washington, with a net worth of $580 million. Washington made most of his fortune as a land speculator.
