Photo credit: Adam Brill   Introduction Joshua Tree National Park is a United States National Park that is located in the Southern California’s High Desert. The name Joshua tree was given by a group of Mormon settlers who crossed the Mojave Desert in the mid-19th century. The tree’s unique shape reminded them of a Biblical story in which Joshua reaches his hands up to the sky in prayer. The park is a gem and a must see visit if you ever travel to California to experience the multi-faced californian nature. Joshua Tree Park is a very popular camping, hiking and rock climbing spot for thousands each year. Even more breathtaking is the beautiful starry nights. It is hard to imagine a desert being colorful and beautiful however take a closer look while at the park. There are true hidden gems around each boulder. Out-of-Body Experiences (OOBE): 7 Step Guide

Out-of-Body Experiences (OOBE): 7 Step Guide  There are many many approaches to having out-of-body experiences, anyone with even a passing interest will have come across a few, so what are the key factors that will lead to success and overcome the pitfalls? Here I outline 7 steps that will help you have the perfect foundation for applying techniques consistently and effectively.  1. Know your strengths and weaknesses – Knowing ourselves on the one hand alludes to a deeper understanding of the self, the core unfettered centre of our being. On another level it speaks of the practical benefit of understanding our strengths and weaknesses. Many of us will set ourselves impossible targets, be it in business, relationships or spiritual development. It is like standing at the foot of a mountain and trying to jump to the top, rather than realising that if we take the time to steadily climb we could succeed and reach the top, not instantly, but almost certainly. But you also need to start your process of learning by understanding, not just the methods or techniques, but what you can and cannot do. If we use the climbing analogy, you would start by thinking about your level of fitness, do you need to train, do you have access to equipment, do you have any experience? Learning to have OBEs is no different. In my workshops and mentoring I work directly with students  to identify what will likely work for them. It is about starting to understand what you are likely to be good at, and what might hold you back.   2. Make small attainable changes – Learn basic skills like relaxation and practice regularly and consistently. When we look at most people trying to have an out-of-body experience we see a similar pattern emerging to the mountain analogy. Many will expect to attain a rare and life-enhancing experience without putting in place the basic foundations. They will not want to change or even disturb the usual patterns of their lives. This often leads to short cut methods or signing up to a ‘snake oil’ type event that claims to change your reality in an evening, or to tell you the secrets of the re

Astral Projection Guide Step By Step

Astral Projection Guide Step by Step  Astral projection refers to an out-of-body-experience (OBE) during which the soul leaves the physical body and travels to the astral plane. People often experience this state during illness or when involved in a near death experience, but it is also possible to practice astral projection at will. This article contains instructions on how to get started.  Three Parts:  Part 1 of 3: Preparing for astral projection 1-a: Start in the morning. Rather than practicing astral projection at night, right before you go to sleep, start in the early morning hours when you're still drowsy. Some say that it's easier to reach the necessary state of relaxation and heightened awareness around dawn.  1-b: Create the right atmosphere. Astral projection requires a state of deep relaxation, so it should be performed in a part of your home where you're completely comfortable. Lie on your bed or sofa and relax your body. It's easier to perform astral projection alone than it is with someone else in the room. If you usually sleep with a partner, choose a room other than the bedroom to practice astral projection. Draw the shades or curtains and rid the room of distracting noises. Any type of interruption could disrupt the state of relaxation you need to achieve. 1-c: Lie down and relax. Position yourself on your back in your chosen room. Close your eyes and try to clear your mind of distracting thoughts. Concentrate on your body and how it feels. The goal is to achieve a state of complete mind and body relaxation. Flex your muscles and then loosen them. Start with your toes and work your way up your body, gradually making your way to your head. Make sure every muscle is completely relaxed when you are through. Breathe deeply and exhale completely. Don't hold tension in your chest and shoulders. Focus your mind on your breathing. Don't get carried away with thoughts of outside worries, and don't get preoccupied yet with the idea of your soul projecting from your body. Just let yourself sink into relaxation. Part 2 of 3: Moving the soul from the body 2-a: Reach a hypnotic state. This hypnotic state is normally known as the hypnagogicstate. Let your body and mind approach sleep, but don't completely lose consciousness. Being at the edge of wakefulness and sleep, a hypnotic state, is necessary for astral projection to occur. Reach this state using the following method: Keeping your eyes closed, let your mind wander to a part of your body, such as your hand, foot or a single toe.

Spirituality - Black Magic - Voodoo Spells

Spirit Worship In Afro-Caribbean Religions  Ancestor worship is one of the most important parts of all African-origin religions; Vodun, Hoodoo, Santería, Umbanda, Kimbanda, Candomble and all Afro-Caribbean cults work with the spirits of the Dead as much as they work with the Orishas/deities. It is believed that, after death, the soul of a dead person can not only help the living, but can reach a much higher level of power and spiritual evolution through the help and offerings of the devotees. The more devotees and rituals offered to a spirit, the more powerful healer/advisor/provider it will become. So, the more you work with the spirits of your ancestors (blood related ancestors or not), the better. A quite explanatory example of this could be the Corte Malandra (which could be translated as The Court Of The Bad Ones), which is a well established part of Maria Lionza's cult in Venezuelan Santeria. The Corte Malandra is a group of spirits who were thieves, dealers and criminals on their human lives; after their deaths, they started helping and healing people who were looking for a change in their lives, and right now you can find their statues in any good Latin botanica. One of the most interesting facts about this type of worship is the fact that their pantheons are constantly evolving and growing; while other forms of Witchcraft have closed forms, Afro-Caribbean Magic is only a few hundred years old – on our own lifetime, we will see new spirits enter the altars and become Santos. Someone that right now is just a priest/priestess, can become a part of the religious worship after his/her death. Figures like La Madama, La Negra Francisca, La Negra Tomasa, José Gregorio Hernández and many, many others were born human and, just as it happens with Catholic Saints, not all of them were specially holy during their lives. One of the first Santeras I ever met was a faithful devotee of La Negra Tomasa. She had a wonderful dark-skinned doll that was her spirit vessel, and the doll had many different clothes and even her own wicker chair. I worked with this woman at an occult shop, and she would often bring her doll to help her when she had difficult spells to make. Whenever she needed any special help from Tomasa, the Santera would sew a complete new outfit for the doll and give her many offerings of candles, fruits, sweets, wine, and anything Tomasa would ask for. Though I have never worked with her myself, I could see how powerful Tomasa was and later found many other Santeros that worked with her. Another common form of Spirit worship is the Bóveda Espiritual (Spiritual Dome), an altar for the dead only that is built with seven glasses of water, white candles and a Caravaca cross, all over a pristine white cloth. Depending on the position of the glasses on the table, the Spiritual Dome can be at "rest", on "attack" or on "defence" mode. Other items like flowers, offerings, cigars, and anything the dead ask for can be added – but, under no circumstances anything offered must contain salt, as it is believed that the dead hate salted food.

Black Holes In The Universe

Black Holes: If a black hole the size of a coin were placed in the center of the Earth, how long would it take to swallow up the whole planet?   By : Frank Heile, PhD in Physics from Stanford University.  The Earth would be destroyed, but the whole planet would not be "swallowed up" by the black hole.  A black hole with a Schwarzschild radius of about a centimeter (which would make it about the size of a coin), would have about the same mass as the Earth. The reason the Earth will be destroyed but not simply "swallowed up" is because the Earth will be "resisting" the black hole in at least two ways: The Explosion First of all, not all of the Earth would simply be "sucked" into the black hole. When the matter near the black hole begins to "fall" into the black hole it will be compressed to very high density which will cause it to be heated to very high temperatures. These high temperatures will cause gamma rays, x-rays and other radiation to heat up the other matter falling in to the black hole.  The net effect will be that there

Astral Traveling

How To Astral Travel   Astral traveling or projection is the act of separating the astral body from the physical body. It empowers you to experience higher levels of consciousness, maximize awareness of self and bring you closer to clarity. Since it is an extension of meditation it is a very valuable skill to learn. The astral body can be employed by the conscious mind to not only explore different place on earth, but also different realms within other dimensions, communicate with spirit guides, angels, animal totems and the djinn. You can even learn about past lives, who we are and how we came to be. The good news is that astral traveling in a natural as falling asleep or waking up. This happens normally when as part of the sleep process, typically when one has reached the deepest dream level. Projecting into the astral realm is really quite a simple procedure, but just be prepared for what you " think " you know of your reality to be altered. All of our knowledge thus far comes from the material world on earth and is very distorted and limited, for instance a feeling of surprise when in astral travel occurs because we have learned from our physical bodies can bring fear to us at the time as we are not used to being in out spirit form outside of our bodies. This sense or feeling of fear can bring you back very quickly to your physical body quickly ending your astral experience. Over time you will get used to the feeling and you will stay out of your body for longer time periods. Some Things to Remember Before Astral Traveling 1. Do no expect anything! Instead enjoy the ride , relax both your body and your mind and see

Near-Death Experiences (NDEs)

Near-Death Experiences (NDEs)   Near-death experiences (NDE) are among the most powerful experiences that a person can have. When people survive a close brush with death, either because of an accident or maybe because of a heart failure, the experience is known as Near-death experiences (NDEs). One most extraordinary aspect of NDEs is that the underlying pattern seems unaltered by a person's culture or belief system, religion, race, education, or any other known variable. A person who has had an NDE normally reports being out of the Physical body, hearing buzzing or ringing sounds, moving through a dark tunnel, encountering deceased loved ones, seeing beautiful scenes and colors, hearing angelic music, feeling peaceful and at Home, learning lessons, and an indescribable radiant light full of love and affection. After this brief experience, they are told that it's not yet time to stay on the Other Side, and they rapidly journey back into the constraints of the now resuscitated physical body.   For most people the experience is joyful beyond

HOW TO STOP SMOKING For EVER

HOW TO STOP SMOKING FOREVER                                          INTRODUCTION   Don’t you think that it is about time you quit smoking? Or have you already quit several times? The purpose of this book is to assist you in quitting forever, without the urge to start up again. In just one week after starting to quit smoking, you can be free from tobacco forever.                                  WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW? If you are about to quit, do you know what to do to fight off that urge to smoke another cigarette?        Do you know the reasons that cause you to light up that cigarette?        If you are still smoking, you need to ask yourself, “Am I ready to quit the smoking habit”?        Can I do it successfully?        There are two factors that will determine your success: 1.You must have the desire to give up your habit. 2.You must have the confidence to know that you can do it.         Of course it’s possible to get motivated to quit, yet you fail for a variety of           reasons. Quitting smoking can be an uncomfortable experience, and cigarettes have given you something to do for a long time. Consequently, it is only natural to think about the ups and downs of giving them up. Most who try to quit, fail to do so and  have to try several times before they succeed. Should you have any doubts about giving up smoking, put it off until you are determined to do so.                                                       THE RISKS                  IF you smoke: You will be twelve times more likely to die from lung cancer. You will be ten times more likely to die from some form of lung disease. You will be ten times more likely to die from cancer of the larynx. You will be six times more likely to die of heart disease. You will be twice as likely to die of a stroke. Now let’s just think for one short moment:      longer, gain many extra years of happy, healthy existence, and save thousands of dollars in increased medical costs? Another overlooked benefit is the   amount of money saved by not buying cigarettes in the first place. Let me explain: If you smoke one pack of cigarettes a day at $2.00 per pack, you spend $730 per year. If your habit has continued for a period of 20 years you will have spent an incredible $14,600! If you smoke two packs for that same period of time, you will spend $29,200!                                       SELF CONFIDENCE  Let’s talk for a moment about your self confidence. How can you help yourself to be successful? You need to be able to answer the following questions: What can you do to reduce the desire to smoke every time it hits you, and what will you do until the urge passes? With the information contained in this book, I will give you the ammunition you need in this war against tobacco. You will be able to resist the urge to smoke every time it hits you and you will be able to resist it until the urge passes. Next, you will need to deal with the reasons that you smoke now. What kind of satisfaction does smoking give you - physical, mental, or emotional?   Now it is time to take a brief quiz to realize why you smoke. QUIZ - MY MOST IMPORTANT REASONS FOR SMOKING  Circle the appropriate number: 1=Never 2=Sometimes 3=Frequently 4=Always 1.         a.) Automatic writing (trance writing)

Automatic writing (trance writing) Automatic writing is writing allegedly directed by a spirit or by the unconscious mind. It is sometimes called "trance" writing because it is done quickly and without judgment, writing whatever comes to mind, "without consciousness," as if in a trance. It is believed that this allows one to tap into the subconscious mind, where "the true self" dwells. Uninhibited by the conscious mind, deep and mystical thoughts can be accessed. Trance writing is also used by some psychotherapists who think it is a quick way to release repressed memories. There is no scientific evidence that trance writing has any therapeutic value.

How Can Affirmations Really Help

How Can Affirmations Really Help?  Positive affirmations are powerful tools to help you manifest what you desire into your life. Everything that exists is made up of energy in the form of radiating wavelengths. The denser the form, a rock for example, the lower the energy levels, at the other end of the spectrum there exists things that have high levels of energy. These high energy level forms are things like light, colors, and thoughts. Yes, thoughts! Have you ever had a day off work and did a lot of thinking, and then found at the end of the day you was exhausted? On a day you hoped was for rest, it tired you out just by thinking. So if you ever needed confirmation that thoughts were powerful, then they can tire you out. If we flipped that scenario slightly, if thoughts can reduce your energy, we must therefore have thoughts that can fill you with energy. Expanding on that theory that thoughts give us energy, we must consider what out thoughts can project onto others. If we are sad for example and enter a room with hap

10 Common Test Mistakes

10 Common Test Mistakes                                                       (10 Common Mistakes Peoples make in Exam).  1. Leaving an answer blank. There is nothing wrong with skipping over a tough question to give yourself some extra time to think it over--just as long as you remember to go back to the question later. The danger is forgetting to go back to every question you’ve skipped. A blank answer is always a wrong answer! Solution: Each time you skip a question, put a check mark beside it. 2. Answering a question twice. You’d be surprised how many times students choose two answers in multiple choice. This makes both answers wrong! Solution: Review your work and make sure each true/false and multiple choice question only has one answer circled! 3. Transferring answers incorrectly from scratch paper. The most frustrating mistake for math students is having an answer correct on the scratch paper, but transferring it wrong to the test! Solution: Double check any work you transfer from a scratch sheet.

Factors That Affect Climate

Factors That Affect Climate The climate of a place is dependent upon the following factors: 1. Latitude 2. Altitude 3. Proximity to Sea. 4. Proximity to Hills. 5. Prevailing wind direction. 6. Prevailing ocean current The climate of a place is dependent upon the following factors: 1.  Latitude 2.  Altitude 3.  Proximity to Sea. 4.  Proximity to Hills. 5.  Prevailing wind direction. 6.  Prevailing ocean current Now I will explain the above factors in a little more detail. Latitude: Latitude is the most important factor which determines the climate of a place.  Whether a city is equatorial,  tropical,  sub-tropical or artic; all depends on its Latitude.  For instance,  Singapore at 1.1 degrees North is a typical equatorial station while Mumbai,  India at 19 N is a typical example of a Tropical Station.  Latitude also determines the length of day in the summer and winter seasons.  In the summer season,  the length of the day gets longer and longer as we move from equ

Infrasound: The source behind ghosts   For a long time, human beings have believed in a paranormal world, ruled by deities, ghosts and spirits.Till date, no scientific proof exists to prove their existence. Until now. It’s called ‘Infrasound’ and it involves fooling your eyes. Infrasound:  By definition, Infrasound is the range of audio frequencies that lie below 20 Hz. It means that the sound wave is making upto 20 oscillations a second, which is the limit of ‘normal’ human hearing. Any frequency above that is audible to the human ears and can be heard as a low ‘audible’ hum extending to a shrill sound upto the frequency of 20,000Hz, which is the upper limit of human hearing. In this article we are concerned only about the frequencies below the

Earth is still our only home but are we really created in the same way as all other species on our planet like Darwin's theory of evolution suggests? Humans are lot different from all other species on our planet, and the fact that there are certain similarities between us and apes isn't enough to establish a plausible link like the theory of evolution suggests. At least I don't think so. The mystery thing in this equation is our supreme brain size. It is completely illogical to believe that humans have all of the sudden evolved into super-smart creatures while this hasn't happened with any other species on our planet, some of which have been on our planet for lot longer time then we have. Such a rapid advance from hiding in the caves till putting your foot on the moon's surface cannot be explained with the theory of evolution because the nature doesn't work that fast, nor does it explain why this

Paranormal Phenomena Culture

Paranormal Phenomena in Popular Culture  This article speaks about the supernatural element that people have believed to be present in our world since ancient times. Ghosts. Witches. Demons. The Extra-terrestrial. Vengeful spirits. Faith Healing. Cryptids like vampires, werewolves, yeti, the Jersey devil, the Bigfoot. Clairvoyance. And even astrology and the Bermuda Triangle. They are an anomaly, an enigma. And their existence cannot be explained by science itself. With more than million accounts of personal experience of the supernatural, the existence of the paranormal phenomena has not been confirmed in this world. Actually, to come to think of it, the existence of such a phenomenon would actually shake the natural order of the world. To explain the term “paranormal” to a layman, it is such a phenomena or event that is not subject to scientific or rational explanation. To believe in such occurring, that has already been upheld as false by science, one must have unshakeable faith in such effects. A believer in the paranormal has to have faith to support his or her position because it goes against every aspect of science; it is unverified, unreliable, inconsistent, contradictory, unexplainable, unconfirmed and unproven. The paranormal appeals to pseudo-science, which is exactly the contrary to science. Pseudo-science deals with appearances whereas real science deals with repeatable and objectively observable facts. Science and pseudo-science are diametrically opposed to each other. Thus

Just three populations of emperor penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) likely survived the last ice age, which occurred from about 19,500 to 16,000 years ago, with one such population likely setting up a refuge in the Ross Sea, an Antarctic body of water southeast of New Zealand, the researchers said. In the study, the researchers examined how climate change affected emperor penguins during the past 30,000 years. They looked at the genetic diversity of modern and ancient populations of emperor penguins in Antarctica, and estimated how it had changed over time. (To determine the penguins' ancient genetics, the researchers looked at radiocarbon-dated subfossils — the remains of emperor penguins that were not fully fossilized.)

Japanese Remote Island Where Cats Rule

Japanese island where cats rule   An army of feral cats rules a remote island in southern Japan, curling up in abandoned houses or strutting about in a fishing village that is overrun with felines outnumbering humans six to one. Originally introduced to the mile-long island of Aoshima to deal with mice that plagued fishermen's boats, the cats stayed on - and multiplied. More than 120 cats swarm the island with only a handful of humans for company, mostly pensioners who didn't join the waves of migrants seeking work in the cities after World War Two. Aoshima, a 30-minute ferry ride off the coast of Ehime prefecture, had been home to 900 people in 1945. The only sign of human activity now is the boatload of day-trippers from the mainland, visiting what is locally known as Cat Island. With no restaurants, cars, shops or kiosks selling snacks, Aoshima is no tourist haven. But cat lovers are not complaining.

Climate puzzle over origins of life on Earth

Climate puzzle over origins of life on Earth   Scientists at the CRPG-CNRS University of Lorraine, The University of Manchester and the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris have ruled out a theory as to why the planet was warm enough to sustain the planet’s earliest life forms when the Sun’s energy was roughly three-quarters the strength it is today. Life evolved on Earth during the Archean, between 3.8 and 2.4 billion years ago, but the weak Sun should have meant the planet was too cold for life to take hold at this time; scientists have therefore been trying to find an explanation for this conundrum, what is dubbed the ‘faint, young Sun paradox’. “During the Archean the solar energy received at the surface of the Earth was

Where Are All the Aliens? The Fermi Paradox

Where Are All the Aliens? The Fermi Paradox   Consider this. The Universe is enormous. There are as many as four-hundred billion stars in our galaxy: the Milky Way. And there are more than one-hundred-and-seventy billion galaxies in the observable Universe. Most of those stars have planets, and many of those planets have got to contain useful minerals and fall within their star’s habitable zone where liquid water is present. The conditions for life are probably everywhere. But where are all the aliens? And think about this. The Universe has been around for 13.8 billion years. Human beings originated 200,000 years ago, so we’ve only been around for 0.01% of the age of the Universe. An intelligent species could arise on any one of those countless worlds, and broadcast their existence to the entire galaxy. Once a species developed interstellar travel, they could completely colonize our galaxy within a few tens of millions of years; just a heartbeat in the age of the Universe. So where are they? As far as we know, Earth is the

Ring of light: Total eclipse over Svalbard islands

Ring of light: Total eclipse over Svalbard islands in Arctic  LONGYEARBYEN, Norway (AP) — For the best view of the solar spectacle of the of the year, Svalbard eclipsed the Faeroe Islands. Sky-gazers in the remote Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard popped champagne corks, oohed and aahed as they witnessed a total solar eclipse Friday under perfect weather conditions. A clear sky over the Arctic islands offered a full view of the sun's corona — a faint ring of rays surrounding the moon — that is only visible during a total eclipse. "I was just blown away. I couldn't believe it," said Hilary Castle, a 58-year-old visitor from London. Meanwhile, a blanket of clouds blocked thousands of people from experiencing the full effect in the Faeroes in the North Atlantic — the only other place on land where the eclipse was total. About 20,000 visitors had traveled to the two island groups to watch the spectacle. "Well it was very close," said Fred Espenak, a retired NASA scientist visiting the Faeroe Islands. "If the eclipse had been 25 minutes later, it would have been fantastic. But the clouds ruined it for us. So I'm very disappointed."    People watch as a solar eclipse begins over the Eden Project near St Austell in Cornwall, England Fr …

Giant P.E.I. great white shark just a ‘teenager’ New research suggests that legendary white shark–at 17-plus feet one of the largest ever measured–was only 20 years old and 'still had a lot of growing to do' A great white shark caught off Canada’s Prince Edward Island in 1983 was listed as one of the world’s five most legendary sharks last summer by the Discovery Channel. At 17-plus feet it was and remains one of the largest white sharks ever measured. “It was a pretty huge monster to see, and a great collection of teeth,” Doug Fraser, a fisherman who was present during the catch, told CBC. “The girth of it was probably over six feet.”

Ten Alien Encounters Debunked

Ten Alien Encounters Debunked    As a longtime investigator of unusual phenomena, I have no doubt that UFOs exist. UFOs, are, of course, Unidentified Flying Objects, and "unidentified" simply means that what the eyewitness saw was not immediately recognized by that person, at that time, under those circumstances. There are many things in the skies that the average person may not be able to identify from a quick look but that a pilot, a meteorologist, or an astronomer might instantly recognize. There are also seemingly unusual experiences that most people may not understand but that a psychologist can explain.

Dark alien planet discovered by NASA

Dark alien planet discovered by NASA Scientists are unsure what causes the planet to be so dark, but they believe it could be 'a chemical we haven't even thought of yet.' An alien world blacker than coal, the darkest planet known, has been discovered in the galaxy. The world in question is a giant the size of Jupiter known as TrES-2b. NASA's Kepler spacecraft detected it lurking around the yellow sun-like star GSC 03549-02811 some 750 lightyears away in the direction of the constellation Draco. The researchers found this gas giant reflects less than 1 percent of the sunlight falling on it, making it darker than any planet or moon seen up to now.   "It's just ridiculous how dark this planet is, how alien it is compared to anything we have in our solar system," study lead-author David Kipping, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told SPACE.com. "It's darker than the blackest lump of coal, than dark acrylic paint you might paint with. It's bizarre how this huge planet became so absorbent of all the light that hits it."

Ayurveda for Springtime Balance

Ayurveda for Springtime Balance Happy Spring! Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space are the five elements that make up all that exists in our universe according to Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of life. Look around you and feel inside of yourself. Notice the elements.  Can you find anything that is not a combination of the five elements?  Each one of us has a unique mind and body constitution made up of these elements combined to make our own Ayurvedic fingerprint. This distinctive constitution is called our prakriti, or mind-body type. In Ayurveda, many people colloquially call our unique type our dosha. The doshas are made up of the five elements and are called vata, pittaand kapha. Vata is composed of air and space elements and we feel it when we move or breathe. Pitta is fire and water and we experience it in quick insights or our burning digestive fire. Kapha is water and earth elements and we experience it when we are hydrated, fluid and content. Every one of us has all three doshic types in varying degrees. Most of us tend to have one dosha which is more dominant than the others, others are dual-doshic, having two dominant doshas, and some of us are tri-doshic, or have equal parts of all three doshas. Whatever one's exclusive body constitution, knowing ones dosha can greatly assist in finding optimal well-being, repairing imbalance, and living out ones highest purpose.

Night Sharks - The Story of The Worst Attack

Night Sharks - The Story of The Worst Attack in History Night falls hard over a U.S. cruiser fire was in the Second World War. Movement of pitch darkness and do nothing to increase the fears of the crew. Under teeming ocean of color pitch deadly Japanese submarine. May than the waters swarm with sharks in the area. Despite security measures, moods god Mars were unleashed as could be worse. American battleship was hit by two torpedoes, sank immediately, the survivors had to endure the bloodiest assault of recorded shark in the long history of relations between man and temuţii predators of the oceans. Let's see how the tragedy took place ... Fear shipwreck  dramatic disappearance of class cruiser Portland, USS Indianapolis, strongly marked the modern history of navigation, and dark list of deadly incidents between people and sharks. Sinking warships meant that the U.S. Navy history, a sad record: the May high loss of life caused by the sinking of one vessel.Parts of the first operational atomic bomb ever built by man were transported to the USS Indianapolis on Tinian Island in the Pacific Ocean on July 26, 1945.As would be worn a heavy load to be transported curse infernal that was then bereaved Japan, USS Indianapolis ended in a disaster of epic proportions, shortly after leaving the military port of Tinian. Then, American Military Command Base Guam USS Indianapolis order sent directly to accompany cruiser USS Leyte Gulf Idaho towards the Philippines, to support the U.S. invasion in the Japanese archipelago. On July 30, 1945, just 14 minutes after midnight, battleship USS Indianapolis was spotted by a Japanese submarine. It was the beginning of an agonizing terror. American ship was hit in the middle of two of the six torpedoes fired on them by the Japanese submarine I-58. The first torpedo exploded in the ship's bow, the water level. The second struck the ship directly in the middle, even in areas where fuel tanks were located and loads of shells and projectiles. Results have led to explosions literally splitting the ship, finally breaking the power supply. Within minutes, the ship began taking water and sinking. From the original crew, which had 1196 members, about 900 survived the explosion and were thrown into the water. 12 minutes later, one of the largest U.S. warships in the Second World War was to disappear forever, swallowed by the waters of the Pacific. Most survivals were in water, with only their life jackets on the rescue of the equipment. Without drinking water, without food, without arms, and especially without any form of protection against sharks, those who escaped death by the torpedoes, would be part of a dreadful end. For nearly four days and four nights, American sailors were at the mercy of recall, the whole meaning of the expression. Of the 880 people, only 317 would survive the storm of death, came in the form of sharks hungry mouths, atotchinuitoare thirst, hypothermia, dehydration, hunger, descuamării skin, salt poisoning and even dementia.  Testimonies from under assault sh

Crocodile Likely Ruled Before Dinosaurs

9-Foot 'Butcher Crocodile' Likely Ruled Before Dinosaurs   A 9-foot-tall beast with bladelike teeth once stalked the warm and wet environs of what is now North Carolina some 230 million years ago, before dinosaurs came onto the scene there, scientists have found. Now called Carnufex carolinensis, the crocodile ancestor likely walked on its hind legs, preying on armored reptiles and early mammal relatives in its ecosystem, the researchers say. They named it Carnufex, meaning "butcher" in Latin, because of its long skull, which resembles a knife, and its bladelike teeth, which it likely used to slice flesh off the bones of prey, said lead study author Lindsay Zanno, of NC State University and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. "'Butcher' seemed a very appropriate way to get that into the minds of people," Zanno told Live Science in an interview. The large creature reveals not only one of the earliest crocodylomorphs, a group that includes today's crocodiles and their close relatives, but also highlights the diversity of top predators of the time. "People don't think about how many different predators we

10 Biggest, Largest Waterfalls In The World

10 Biggest, Largest Waterfalls In The World   Anyone who’s seen a waterfall up close will agree that their majesty is almost indescribable. If even a small fall can inspire these feelings, imagine what it’s like to look at the world’s largest waterfall. These are the 10 biggest falls on the planet, based on their width, rather than height or volume. Each one is wonderful in its own way. Inga Falls Inga Falls (Richard and Jo deMeester/Flickr) Inga Falls, a 3,000-foot wide waterfall, is located on the Congo River, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It’s a series of falls and rapids, which drops around 315 feet, but very gradually over a run of roughly 9 miles. However, the main, and most impressive, part of the falls drops around 70 feet in one go. There are hundreds of channels in these falls, separated out by a multitude of large rocks and small islands. Niagara Falls Nigara Waterfall (Rodnet Campbell/Flickr) Despite being relatively low on the list of the world’s largest falls, Niagara Falls is undoubtedly the best known waterfall on the planet. It receives somewhere between 14 and 20 million visitors annually and has been the location for many foolhardy and daring feats, such as that performed by Annie Edson Taylor, who was the first person to survive a trip over the Niagara Falls in a barrel. At 3,950 feet wide, it’s far from the largest waterfall around, but it is the falls with the largest volume of water traveling through it. It has three separate parts: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe, or Canadian, Falls.  Chutes Wagenia Chutes Wagenia (wodofer/BlogSpot)

How the Ancient Egyptians Really Built the Pyramid

How the Ancient Egyptians Really Built the Pyramids The ancient Egyptians who built the pyramids may have been able to move massive stone blocks across the desert by wetting the sand in front of a contraption built to pull the heavy objects, according to a new study. Why Did We Stop Building Pyramids? We look at some of the most amazing pyramids from South America to Egypt. Physicists at the University of Amsterdam investigated the forces needed to pull weighty objects on a giant sled over desert sand, and discovered that dampening the sand in front of the primitive device reduces friction on the sled, making it easier to operate. The findings help answer one of the most enduring historical mysteries: how the Egyptians were able to accomplish the seemingly impossible task of constructing the famous pyramids. Incredible stories behind shipwrecks of the UK

Incredible stories behind shipwrecks of the UK Britannia was ruling the waves for so many centuries that there were bound to be casualties, reports the Sunday People. It’s hardly surprising that our coastal waters are littered with the wrecks of majestic warships, trading vessels and submarines. Britain certainly has the wrecks factor and there are 64 protected sites in our seas. Each has a fascinating story and many are memorials to the bravery of the sailors who fought and died for Britain. One of the wrecks protected by English Heritage is on the Western Rocks at the Isles of Scilly. It’s the site of the 1707 Scilly naval disaster when 1,684 men from four ships died. They were aboard the Eagle, Association, Firebrand and Romney which were returning from besieging Toulon in France. A navigation error caused three to hit rocks and sink, the fourth went down near Bishop Rock.Experts believe the site is probably the Eagle. Here are some of the most fascinating wrecks giving us a precious window on the past… Mary Rose Majestic: The Mary Rose, Henry VIII's Ship   The magnificent Mary Rose was one of the Navy’s largest vessels and is thought to have been Henry VIII’s flagship. The 700-ton warship, built in 1510 and armed with 91 guns, was leading an attack on the French fleet when she sank in The Solent, off South sea Castle in 1545. She lay undiscovered on the seabed for almost 300 years until she snagged a fisherman’s line. But despite initial excitement interest waned and the ship was forgotten again until 1965 when the search resumed. In 1971 the wreck was identified as the Mary Rose and 11 years later, in 1982, about 60 million people around the world watched as a huge part of the salvaged hull was brought to the surface and taken to a dry dock at Portsmouth Naval base. Today it is on show at the Mary Rose Museum along with many of the 19,000 artifacts discovered, including leather shoes, a velvet hat, weapons and sailing gear. It is still unclear why the Mary Rose sank, parts of her remain on the seabed. Salcombe  Treasure: Gold found at the Salcombe Canon site  The wreck at Prawle Point is thought to be a 17th century armed trading ship, which sank on its return from Morocco to port in Holland. The first dive team to scour the ruins in Devon in 1994 unexpectedly found pieces of gold, including more than 400 Islamic gold coins – the most ever found in Britain.

Surprising Ways to Travel Machu Picchu

Surprising Ways to Travel Machu Picchu  Take in the ancient Incan ruins in style. (Photo: Mountain Lodges of Peru) When you think of Machu Picchu, Peru, you probably think of old ruins, beautiful views, and … dirt. Lots of dirt. That’s because the typical Machu Picchu experience involves hiking the Inca Trail and camping along the way, which takes four or five days total. But while camping is great — big props to those who do it — there are other ways to see the famous ancient ruins that don’t involve sleeping on the ground and putting your hygiene on the back burner. Here, five (cleaner) alternatives. 1.    You can stay in lodges along the Inca Trail. The eco-tourism company  offers the Mountain Lodges of Peru , offers the Salkantay Journey a lodge-to-lodge trek along the Salkantay Inca Trail that takes you to the legendary Inca ruins. Led by a personal guide for the duration of the trip, hikers stay in four deluxe lodges on the five-day journey, which ends at Peru’s golden child, Machu Picchu itself. A starry night at one of the lodges on the Salkantay Journey. (Photo: Mountain Lodges of Peru)  Adventurers hike anywhere from three to seven hours per day, through nine biozones and 15 ecosystems, including a lush rainforest and a beautiful glacier lake. There’s also plenty of culture to experience along the way, as many local natives are more than willing to share their traditions and ideas with those passing through on their journeys. And as for the lodges themselves? One word: deluxe. All four of them are inspired by traditional Inca architecture and feature fine dining, good wine, massage services, and Jacuzzis. You know, your basic provisions for living the dream. Conclusion: If you choose to travel the Inca Trail lodge style, you are in for a cozy and luxurious treat at the beginning and end of each day.

Pictures Around the World

24 Pictures From Around the World That Will Make You Re-Evaluate Your Entire Life They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In this case, they would be right. An image can capture the essence of something powerful more than any writer or poet. An image is simple; it’s right there in front of you, completely unfiltered. Words can get lost in translation and taken out of context; their meaning confused and misinterpreted. Images aren’t just a mixture of colors caught on paper. They are something that can stir and evoke raw emotions inside of us.   There are standard examples of the importance of images. According to the Pew Research Center, an Internet user is 7.4 times more likely to click on content if an image is attached to it. Branding and marketing experts carefully utilize color schemes and images to persuade us to buy certain products. But why are we drawn to these visuals? How do they hold so much power over us? Psychologists explain that images help to easily convey four key stimulants: expectations, emotion, motivation and culture. All four obviously hold a significant importance in daily human life and tap into the innate id. Images and visuals also elicit projections from the perceiver. If you put a picture of a boy and his dog in front of you, me and ten other people, that picture will probably mean something different for everyone who sees it. Maybe one person in the group recently lost their dog, maybe someone else had a bad childhood experience with a dog. Whatever the case may be, each person’s reaction to the picture will be somewhat based on their previous experiences and opinions. Their subjectivity will take hold and help to dictate the emotions they feel when presented with that picture. In that sense, images aren’t just a solitary snapshot of a single moment. They are far reaching reminders of memories both good and bad. They are catalysts for emotional reactions. They are powerful connections to something larger than yourself and they are visual representations of your inner most desires and fears.

So far, the archaeologists have excavated seven tombs containing at least 171 mummies from the site, now called Tenahaha. The tombs are located on small hills surrounding the site. "The dead, likely numbering in the low thousands, towered over the living," wrote archaeologist Justin Jennings, a curator at Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum, in a chapter of the newly published book "Tenahaha and the Wari State: A View of the Middle Horizon from the Cotahuasi Valley" (University of Alabama Press, 2015). Before rigor mortis set in, the mummies had their knees put up to the level of their shoulders and their arms folded along their chest, the researchers found. The corpses were then bound with rope and wrapped in layers of textiles. The mummies range in age from neonate fetuses to older adults, with some of the youngest mummies (such as infants) being buried in jars. While alive the people appear to have lived in villages close to Tenahaha.

City in The Clouds, Machu Picchu

The City in The Clouds The city called Machu Picchu, lies under the plat topped cone of Huayna Picchu and resembles an eagles nest perched on the steep slopes.   The city called Machu Picchu, lies under the plat topped cone of Huayna Picchu and resembles an eagles nest perched on the steep slopes. The magnificent view it offer cannot be captured by the most camera lens. Only human eye can absorb the marvelous panorama. It is remarkable how the Indian could have built such a city. In an almost inaccessible and very remote site, without modern technology. The path to Machu Picchu is very narrow and they only allow people walk in to single file. They lead through mountains higher than the Alps.  Climb over ridges and go through deep valleys.

7 Smart Ways To Save Water In The Yard

7 Smart Ways To Save Water In The Yard                   Drip irrigation systems can help avoid wasting water in the yard and garden. With low-pressure emission, the water drips in slowly at root level, dispersed only where needed. This practice prevents water loss through runoff or evaporation—and saves you money in the process. As a bonus, drip systems also discourage the growth of weeds and fungal diseases. One of the most cost-efficient ways to hydrate the lawn is to reuse water from elsewhere around the home. Known as gray water, this relatively clean wastewater can be be piped from your kitchen sink, dishwasher, washing machine, or tub (but not the toilet) out to your drip irrigation system to benefit the rest of your property. While you're at it, capitalize on Mother Nature's own irrigation system. Rainwater harvesting

The Power Of Northern Thailand (Food) I moved to the other end of the world to northern Thailand to eat better. One could say that I am more than a little interest in food.   I remember the food writer and TV celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, saying that he is dreaming of herbs. Surprisingly, it is only reasonable thing and normal sounding I have ever heard. It is not unusual for me to spend days or weeks to think about recipes or food products, in particular, although I have not even dreamed of herbs ... I'm sure that even if it's just a matter of

Top 5 Cities Around the World 1. Tokyo, Japan Tokyo; city of flashing neon lights, super-advanced gadgetry, Hello Kitty and about 13 million people, which makes it one of the most densely populated cities in the world. But it's got more to offer than batteries, bodies and blinking lights. From the cacophony of sights, sounds and smells that is Tokyo, it is possible to make a short journey and find yourself atop a mountain with nothing other than peace and tranquillity surrounding you. It may be far to travel to but it's got a whole lot to offer - whether you like stuffed cat toys or not. Tokyo and Japan in general is not a cheap place to get to or stay. Cheap flights can be obtained for about £400 to £500, but during the summer months can peak at £900 return! Hostels cost around £15 to £20 per night and there are plenty of fast food outlets about, so you can feed yourself cheaply. If you've got the stomach for it, sushi can cost as little as £1 per portion, so that should help stretch the budget. 2. Birds' Nests in Bizarre Urban Places (05-May-15)

Birds' Nests in Bizarre Urban Places: Photos OSPREY NEST ON A STATUE IN MASSACHUSETTS Some birds have a flair for the funky when it comes to selecting where to build their nests, finds the Celebrate Urban Birds project at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Now that spring nesting season is underway, don't be surprised if you find a nest in old boots left outside, on top of traffic signals, in gutters and downspouts and at many other surprising locations. This osprey, for example, unintentionally gave the female figure depicted by the statue a "hat." Underway right now is Cornell's "Funky Nests in Funky Places" contest, where entrants can submit photos, videos and more documenting oddly placed nests. "Many people, particularly those living in cities, are not aware of all the wild birds living in in their neighborhoods, believing they would only be found in faraway places," Cornell's Marta del Campo told Discovery News. The challenge, held every spring since 2009, was created to encourage people to discover the kinds of birds living and nesting in their neighborhoods, del Campo explained.  AMERICAN ROBIN LADDER 'CONDO' IN OHIO A ladder serves as an avian "condo," since multiple American robins decided to build their nest on it. Del Campo said that American robins, along with mourning doves, house sparrows and certain hummingbird species, commonly build their nests in unexpected urban locations.  AMERICAN ROBIN NESTING ON A TRUCK TIRE IN PENNSYLVANIA

POWERFUL WOMEN RULERS in History (19-May-15)

The MOST POWERFUL WOMEN RULERS in History We all know that the world is spinning around the women, but women have existed throughout the history who literally ruled the world, or at least most of it.  1. Cleopatra – The famous Egyptian queen whose full name is Cleopatra VII Philopator (69 BC – 30 BC) was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty and ruled ancient with Egypt. Her reign began 51 BC when she was only 18. Her grandfather was Ptolemy I, one of the generals of Alexander the Great and what is believed he was also half-brother of Philip of Macedon, which confirmed that she had Macedonian origin. Once Gaius Julius Caesar defeated her older brother, she took the throne of Egypt. After her death, the Ptolemy dynasty was extincted and Egypt became a Roman province. Her life, as well as her reign was turbulent and dynamic. According to Egyptian customs she was forced to marry her brother, and in the meantime she became Caesar’s mistress. She later have ordered the killing of her brother Ptolemy XIV in order her son, whose father was a Caesar, to stand on the throne. Also, she was a lover of Mark Anthony, with whom she had three children. 2. Queen Theodora – (497-548 AD) – the wife of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, emperor of the Roman Empire. She was declared a saint by the Orthodox Christian Church and is believed to be the most powerful and influential woman in the history of the Roman Empire. Before her marriage to Justinian I, Theodora was an actress who was amusing the nobles. She later joined the Christian movement and that had completely changed her way of life. She married Justinian I in 523 AD, and after his death in 525 AD, she became the empress of the Roman Empire. Having taken control of the empire, many important government decisions were taken by Theodora as reducing the high taxes, the resolution of religious controversy and political corruption. And while Justinian I was alive, Theodora helped him in making some important decisions, and once even managed to help her husband to escaping and to suppress a rebellion in Constantinople. Theodora has promoted women’s rights, built churches, created laws against forced prostitution and set up death penalty for rape. She died of cancer at age 51.   3. Eleanor – Queen of England

The Generations of Men (20-May-15)

The Generations of Men   A governor it was proclaimed this time,  When all who would come seeking in New Hampshire  Ancestral memories might come together.  And those of the name Stark gathered in Bow,  A rock-strewn town where farming has fallen off,  And sprout-lands flourish where the axe has gone.  Someone had literally run to earth  In an old cellar hole in a by-road  The origin of all the family there.  Thence they were sprung, so numerous a tribe  That now not all the houses left in town  Made shift to shelter them without the help  Of here and there a tent in grove and orchard.  They were at Bow, but that was not enough:  Nothing would do but they must fix a day  To stand together on the crater's verge  That turned them on the world, and try to fathom  The past and get some strangeness out of it.  But rain spoiled all. The day began uncertain,  With clouds low trailing and moments of rain that misted.  The young folk held some hope out to each other  Till well toward noon when the storm settled down  With a swish in the grass. 'What if the others  Are there,' they said. 'It isn't going to rain.'  Only one from a farm not far away  Strolled thither, not expecting he would find  Anyone else, but out of idleness.  One, and one other, yes, for there were two.  The second round the curving hillside road  Was a girl; and she halted some way off  To reconnoitre, and then made up her mind  At least to pass by and see who he was,  And perhaps hear some word about the weather.  This was some Stark she didn't know. He nodded.  'No fête to-day,' he said.  'It looks that way.'  She swept the heavens, turning on her heel.  'I only idled down.'  'I idled down.'  Provision there had been for just such meeting  Of stranger cousins, in a family tree  Drawn on a sort of passport with the branch  Of the one bearing it done in detail-  Some zealous one's laborious device.  She made a sudden movement toward her bodice,  As one who clasps her heart. They laughed together.  'Stark?' he inquired. 'No matter for the proof.'  'Yes, Stark. And you?'  'I'm Stark.' He drew his passport.  'You know we might not be and still be cousins:  The town is full of Chases, Lowes, and Baileys,  All claiming some priority in Starkness.  My mother was a Lane, yet might have married  Anyone upon earth and still her children  Would have been Starks, and doubtless here to-day.'  'You riddle with your genealogy  Like a Viola. I don't follow you.'  'I only mean my mother was a Stark  Several times over, and by marrying father  No more than brought us back into the name.'  'One ought not to be thrown into confusion  By a plain statement of relationship,  But I own what you say makes my head spin.  You take my card- you seem so good at such things-

The Bonfire - Poem (26-May-15)

The Bonfire - Poem OH, let’s go up the hill and scare ourselves,  As reckless as the best of them to-night,  By setting fire to all the brush we piled  With pitchy hands to wait for rain or snow.  Oh, let’s not wait for rain to make it safe.  The pile is ours: we dragged it bough on bough  Down dark converging paths between the pines.  Let’s not care what we do with it to-night.  Divide it? No! But burn it as one pile  The way we piled it. And let’s be the talk  Of people brought to windows by a light  Thrown from somewhere against their wall-paper.  Rouse them all, both the free and not so free  With saying what they’d like to do to us  For what they’d better wait till we have done.  Let’s all but bring to life this old volcano,  If that is what the mountain ever was—  And scare ourselves. Let wild fire loose we will….”  “And scare you too?” the children said together.  “Why wouldn’t it scare me to have a fire  Begin in smudge with ropy smoke and know  That still, if I repent, I may recall it,  But in a moment not: a little spurt  Of burning fatness, and then nothing but  The fire itself can put it out, and that  By burning out, and before it burns out  It will have roared first and mixed sparks with stars,  And sweeping round it with a flaming sword,  Made the dim trees stand back in wider circle—  Done so much and I know not how much more  I mean it shall not do if I can bind it.

Place For A Third - Poem (27-May-15)

Place For A Third - Poem by Robert Frost Nothing to say to all those marriages!  She had made three herself to three of his.  The score was even for them, three to three.  But come to die she found she cared so much:  She thought of children in a burial row;  Three children in a burial row were sad.  One man's three women in a burial row  Somehow made her impatient with the man.  And so she said to Laban, "You have done  A good deal right; don't do the last thing wrong.  Don't make me lie with those two other women."  Laban said, No, he would not make her lie  With anyone but that she had a mind to,  If that was how she felt, of course, he said.  She went her way. But Laban having caught  This glimpse of lingering person in Eliza,  And anxious to make all he could of it  With something he remembered in himself,  Tried to think how he could exceed his promise,  And give good measure to the dead, though thankless.  If that was how she felt, he kept repeating.  His first thought under pressure was a grave  In a new boughten grave plot by herself,  Under he didn't care how great a stone:

My Friend, My Love (05-August-15)

My Friend, My Love It began as all fires do, a spark soon ignited into a blaze of warmth and colourful delight. You held my hand, became my friend, earned my trust and my future once again looked bright. Loneliness turned to hope, emptiness filled up with dreams. Hunger was satisfied,  and the darkness lit by love's moonbeams. Tears no longer hit the ground, they fall on your loving shoulder. I feel younger, as our love grows older. You Don't Really Love Me  I am only a 14 year old girl. This poem describes how hard it was me when I was little growing up without a mom. She left my father, four brothers, and I when I was only 2 years old. Being I was young, I didn't remember her and just assumed that everybody only had a dad. I quickly learned this wasn't true, and realized that my brother's "made up stories" about our alcoholic, cheating mother were true. I also learned that if she loved me, she never would have left.

Amazing Ruins of the Ancient World   Step Pyramid of Djoser The first pyramid ever built by the Egyptians, Djoser rises up 197 feet (60 meters) with six steplike layers, one built on top of the other. The pyramidwas constructed at Saqqara about 4,700 years ago. Beneath the pyramid lies a labyrinth of tunnels extending 3.5 miles (5.5 kilometers). At the labyrinth's center is a 90-foot (28-meter)-deep shaft containing the burial chamber of Djoser, king of Egypt's third dynasty. Fragments of Djoser's granite sarcophagus have been recovered during recent conservation work. "The construction of the step pyramid would see the beginning of an ambitious pyramid building program that would culminate with the Great Pyramids at Giza," writes LiveScience contributor Owen Jarus. Pyramids of Giza The Giza pyramids — Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure — were constructed between 2589 B.C. and 2504 B.C., though scientists still debate how exactly they were erected. Once built, the Giza pyramids were encased in white limestone, most of which has worn away. The pyramids were most likely used as the resting places for their respective kings. The grave goods once located inside the pyramid complexes would have helped the kings ascend to the afterlife. Easter Island Rapa Nui, or Easter Island as the Europeans named it, is not big, spanning just 14 miles by 7 miles (22 by 11 kilometers) at its farthest points, but it holds quite a bit of culture and mystique. The island, located in the southeast Pacific Ocean, is home to some 1,000 human-faced statues called moai — the moai rise up 40 feet (12 meters) and weigh a whopping 75 tons or so. How the behemoths moved from the quarry where they were carved to their current location is steeped in mystery, with a

Engelberg, Switzerland Ski Resort Review Outdoors, possibilities include 36km of winter walking paths, cross-country skiing, sledding, guided tours of the glacier caves, snow-tubing and visits to Furenalp with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Engelberg rests lee of a 12th-century Benedictine monastery, and it was two of the monks who, in 1744, turned out to be the first people to climb Engelberg's greatest landmark, Mt Titlis - the highest peak in central Switzerland at 3,238m. The monastery carries on to play a major role in the resort, as does Wit Titlis - home to the world's first revolving cable-car and year-round skiing. Once greatly popular with British skiers, Engelberg (Angel Mountain) lost out to the wave of purpose-built resorts that were made in the French Alps, but the place is now staging a brave recovery.

The Top Most Dangerous Animals That We Must Be Aware Of Box Jellyfish: There are a number of species of box jellyfish, but they are all quite dangerous. The sea wasp box jellyfish is perhaps the most deadly variety. This translucent sea-dweller may not look all that menacing, but it is the most venomous animal on planet Earth. Box jellyfish are deadly to many different animals, not the least of all, us. If you get stung by one of these animals, you are very likely to die. Even if you do not, you will be in tremendous pain for some time afterward. Cone Snail: Another ocean dweller to be wary of is the cone snail. It may not look like much, and you may easily mistake it for any other snail on the beach, but it is extremely deadly. Just one drop of its venom can kill twenty human adults. There is no antivenin, which means that if you are stung, you will almost certainly be dead within minutes. Black Mamba: This snake may look less fearsome than the hooded cobra, but it is arguably more dangerous. It can strike very quickly and can also chase its victims at an incredible speed. It chooses to do this quite often without any provocation whatsoever. Cape Buffalo: This is a particularly aggressive inhabitant of the African grasslands. Cape buffalo have been known to charge victims without provocation, rather like the black mamba. While they are obviously not venomous, they do have an asset the mamba does not—2,000 pounds of weight and the ability to charge at 40 miles an hour. These creatures will continue charging even if they are shot in the heart, and have no reservations about charging vehicles. They’ve also been known to attack predators like lions.

Extreme Drives: The 10 Scariest Highways for White-Knuckle Road Trips Colorado State Highway 82 Risk Factor: The road from Aspen is not for those who fear heights. Not only is it the highest paved lane in Colorado—12,100 feet above sea level at Independence Pass in the Rocky Mountains—it's also full of steep drop-offs, tight curves, and narrow stretches that can fit only one car at a time. For these reasons, the Colorado Department of Transportation closes down the route through Independence Pass each winter. Even if you make it out of the winding mountain roads, once you get near Cañon City on Highway 82, there's a trek across the soaring, 1,260-foot-long Royal Gorge Bridge. Towering 955 feet above the Arkansas River, it held the record for being the highest suspension bridge in the world until it was bested by China's Beipanjiang River Bridge in 2003.   Dalton Highway Risk Factor: How harrowing is the drive along the Dalton Highway? It's so intense that they made a reality TV show about it. The fourth through sixth seasons of the History Channel's Ice Road Truckersfocus in part on the Dalton Highway, a road built in the '70s to bring supplies along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. (It was also featured in an episode of the BBC Two's Most Dangerous Roads.) Along the 414-mile route, drivers are subjected to freezing temperatures, gravel roads, avalanches, whiteout snowstorms, as well as a general lack of cell phone reception or service stations. There's a reason this drive is mostly attempted by truckers—and, even then, with lots of spare tires and at speeds slower than 55 mph.   Tail of the Dragon Risk Factor: Talk about curves. The 11-mile stretch of US 129 at Deals Gap, starting at the North Carolina/Tennessee border, is said to have 318 curves. That exact number is probably just a legend, but it's a darned twisty road. The curves themselves have their own nicknames, and, with monikers like Pearly Gates, Brake or Bust Bend, and Gravity Cavity, you can tell these twists are dead serious. Why you might be tempted to drive it anyway: Want to test your performance driving skills? The number of curves in the scenic highway makes it a popular stretch for motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts looking to flaunt the 30 mph speed limit. (Even if you don't want to take the wheel, the people watching is pretty great.) Saddle Road

Why Now Is the Time to   Visit Fez, Morocco  Quietly and ever so subtly, a new generation of designers, restaurateurs, and hoteliers have brought a fresh dimension to Morocco’s most beguiling city—while staying true to its age-old traditions and singular spirit. There are cities we love because they’re always in flux; shape-shifters whose primary currency is the new, the innovative, the unexpected. And then there are cities we love because they never seem to change: Year after year, trip after trip, they appear as we remember them, a memory obligingly and reassuringly coming to life before us.

The Great Ocean Road Highlights of  the Great Ocean Road in Australia.... Whist in Melbourne I decided to do a 3 day Great Ocean Road tour with 'Australian Adventures' tour group before heading to Alice Springs. Had an awesome driver/guide called Todd who was from Adelaide, and he kept us all in hysterics the whole time with his wit and humour, and there were 14 of us on the tour, and a fantastic group they were. We started off in Torquay, then stopped at Bells Beach where part of the film 'Point Break' was filmed, then stopped at a little town Lorne to look around. It was a cute little seaside town, then onto Kennett River where we saw wild koalas in the tress and lorikeet birds. The koalas were so cute. I had seen them in sanctuaries before, but it was so lovely to see them in the wild, and they were a lot bigger, all snoozing and lazily munching away in the treetops. Next was Apollo Bay for lunch, then to the Ottway rain forest and we did a tree top walk which was like being in the middle of Jurassic Park. The birds were singing away – and they sound totally different to English birds, there were sounds of all sorts of wildlife amongst the giant trees. It wa

Execution Rocks: New York’s Most Unusual B&B   Over the past week, I’ve been scouting for islands around New York City, easily one of the more fun scouting assignments I’ve had in recent memory. After a boat ride out to take some pictures last Wednesday, we were heading back to shore when I noticed a small lighthouse on a rocky island in the distance. I asked my guide about it, and was told it was known as Execution Rocks, home to a lighthouse and keeper’s house that have not been inhabited since 1979. How did Execution Rocks gain its ominous monicker? The most oft-told legend has it that during the Revolutionary War, the British would execute American revolutionaries by chaining them to the rocks at low tide, leaving them to drown as the tide came in. Sadly, the truth is slightly less exciting. The name actually refers to the dangerous submerged rocks in the area, a hazard for ships passing through. The 1806  American Coast Pilot

Butcher Crocodile' Likely Ruled Before Dinosaurs A 9-foot-tall beast with bladelike teeth once stalked the warm and wet environs of what is now North Carolina some 230 million years ago, before dinosaurs came onto the scene there, scientists have found. The large creature reveals not only one of the earliest crocodylomorphs, a group that includes today's crocodiles

El Dorado: the lost city of gold

El Dorado: the lost city of gold Myth and mysteries     Many people believe in the popular legend of a hidden city in South America, full of treasures and uncountable quantities of gold. The lure of these vast riches sent many explorers looking for it. The journey was difficult and dangerous and even resulted in death for some.  The Europeans came to know about it in the 16th century and thus many Spanish explorers went looking for this 'golden' city. The Europeans heard the tale from the locals who were quite sure the stories about a city built with gold were actually true. There is also a theory that states that the original

A Reality Check for Visiting Cuba   Not All Cigars and Classic Cars  Classic cars converted to taxis, such as this, look great in Havana, but they also lack seat belts and air-conditioning. But visitors envisioning salsa in the streets and glamorous vintage cars should also be prepared to manage without ATMs, credit cards, Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, seat belts, or toilet paper. Here are eight tips for visiting Havana. If you need it, bring it  You might be able to find some supplies at a fancy hotels such as the Hotel Nacional.  (AP Photo/Kathy Willens)  I forgot to bring my toothbrush to Havana. It took me three days to find a new one. Granted, I was in a “casa particular,” a Cuban homestay booked through Airbnb in a rundown part of town. Street vendors sell Che Guevara T-shirts and tropical fruit. But good luck buying sunscreen or Band-Aids. The fancy hotels sell some things in shops onsite, of course, but Havana just doesn’t have many stores. Even Harris Brothers, a market on Monserrate at O'Reilly Street, isn’t overflowing with consumer goods — though you can buy souvenir bags of coffee. Public bathrooms aren’t bad, but I was glad I’d brought a roll of toilet paper in my bag. Though officially unidentified, other items at the site – including a European brass seal and virtually intact ornate clay pipe – suggest she was from Holland and loaded with North African cargo.
