It’s Friday night, and I’m running around my neighborhood, barefoot, screaming, “Fig Newton!” at the top of my lungs, and shaking a prescription bottle over my head like a maraca. Usually when our dog runs away, the sound of his Prozac brings him home, and tonight is no exception. He streaks down the street like a bolt of lightning, skidding to a stop in front of our house. The look on his face reminds me of an obnoxious tween busted for snapping someone’s bra strap: Who, me? I met Fig when he was twelve weeks old, a recent transport to New Jersey from a kill shelter in Georgia. I’d been lurking on Petfinder for months, much to the chagrin of my husband, who pointed out that-at two, five, and

Minnesota company My Pillow’s sweet dreams were made of a patented open-cell, poly-foam design created by inventor Michael J. Lindell. The pillow, a staple of late-night TV infomercials, was an American success story. It has sold some 18 million pillows since the first sale in 2005. My Pillow’s Twitter feed showed celebrities like actors Frankie Muniz and Neil Patrick Harris, former boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and, most recently, GOP nominee Donald Trump accepting a My Pillow into their lives. My Pillow promised comfort, coolness and, as Lindell described it in one commercial, an ability to keep sleepers from “flip-flopping all night long like a guppy.” Lindell told Consumer Reports in February that
Washington PostBefore you leave the house in the morning (or better yet, before you leave the bedroom), make your bed. If you're in a rush, pull the comforter up to the pillows, and smooth it out to create the semblance of a made bed. It provided the comforting, belly-warming satisfaction a chilly night calls for, and it charmed me with the rustic-chic elegance that came from pairing chickpeas with farro, an ancient variety of wheat that is officially on trend these days, I’m happy to say. When I began to experiment with my own take on it, I realized that the dish involved the same basic technique as a familiar favorite, pasta e fagioli (pasta and beans), which, growing up in Queens, I always knew as “pasta fazool.” The basic idea is the same: The classic onion-carrot-celery triad is softened in a pot with some garlic; then broth, tomatoes and herbs are stirred in along with the beans (which, here, are chickpeas); after those cook for a while, the grain is added and cooked al dente.
Washington PostI know, this one seems like a tough one, yet your blender, sugar bowl, coffee maker, and other knickknacky things not only take up space on your counter, but they also actually make it impossible to clean. They gather dust and oily muck on and around them, and you ignore it. Marie Kondo says, "Tidying your kitchen means wiping away any water or oil." Dear Amy: I have been with my husband for 30 years. We are both in our 70s, and this is a second marriage for both of us. I was widowed, and he was divorced. My husband is not an easy person to be with. He treats me like a child, and I can’t make any decisions without having to give an “accounting,” whether buying items at the grocery store, reading a certain book or magazine, or purchasing personal wear. He is so hypercritical about everything, none of his siblings talk to him; his adult children don’t talk to him, and his grandchildren call him only a couple of times a year. New York PostWhile on an adventure called “The Great American Road Trip,” five Canadian filmmakers from High on Life SundayFundayz broke laws, ignored warnings and caused a variety of mayhem in several national parks, the most egregious perhaps being at Yellowstone National Park. There, four members of the group were videotaped and photographed walking on a hazardous geothermal area known as the Grand Prismatic Spring. They blatantly disregarded warning signs by stepping off the boardwalk and approaching the third-largest hot spring in the world. Editor’s note: The images below may be upsetting to some readers. When photographer Paul Hilton arrived at a clearing in Sumatra, Indonesia, last year, there was just a backhoe, a couple of law enforcement officials and an open pit about to be set on fire ― the final act of a major wildlife crime bust. The day before, Hilton had been in a warehouse in the city of Medan when police raided the building on a tip that a seafood trading company was trafficking in smuggled creatures hunted for their valuable body parts. He photographed the raid and the lucky critters that made it out alive. Though he found it heartbreaking, “visually, it wasn’t that impactful,” Hilton said. But it was the pit a few

RedbookKABUL - Khanzir likes to lie in the sun. He spends long days sprawled across the grass, sometimes trotting over to greet the people passing by and admiring him. He almost seems to know he is popular, that visitors come from far and wide to catch a glimpse of him. Khanzir’s celebrity is derived from the fact that he is the only pig in all of Afghanistan. In Afghanistan, as in most Islamic nations, eating pork is considered haram. In fact, one interpretation of that belief forbids even touching the animal. As a result, no pigs are reared or farmed in the country. Besides, the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan is no place for a domestic pig. “By and large, most Afghans have never seen a pig in

A former state prison inmate who fathered a child with a prison counselor while serving time in a Jackson-area prison is suing the Michigan Department of Corrections and state officials, saying he was forced into sex and officials should have known what was happening. Steven Moerman of Grand Rapids alleges prison counselor Susan Lee Clingerman used him as "a virtual sex slave, demanding sexual gratification at her whim," while he was imprisoned at Parnall Correctional Facility on a drug charge in 2014 and receiving counseling for mental illness. In a lawsuit filed in September in Jackson County Circuit Court, Moerman alleges prison officials knew or should have known what was happening because another prison counselor acted as a lookout for Clingerman.
Detroit Free PressHey, isn’t that … political offspring Bristol Palin and her husband, Dakota Meyer, toting shopping bags on 14th Street NW on Tuesday? The Alaskan couple’s stormy relationship has long been tabloid fodder, but now it’s all marital bliss, it seems - the casually dressed duo held hands as they carried their haul: a garment bag from Men’s Warehouse for him, and Gap and Victoria’s Secret purchases for her. No word on what brings the 26-year-old daughter of former Alaska gov and onetime vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her husband to the Lower 48, but 28-year-old Meyer, who was a Marine and a Medal of Honor awardee, often has far-flung speaking engagements. The Cheat SheetThe study looked at effectiveness ratings for English language arts and math teachers in 26 districts over the course of five years. These teachers worked with students in the fourth through eighth grades. Researchers used a value-added model to measure the effectiveness of a teacher. This statistical model is controversial in the education world ― Isenberg called it an “imperfect measure,” but he said it’s the best available option. This statistical technique is used to isolate how students’ test scores change from year to year, and how much a teacher is contributing to these changes. Although researchers did not work with a nationally representative sample of school districts, “the study districts
The Huffington PostCarolyn Hax is on leave. This column originally ran Aug. 20, 2008. Dear Carolyn: I am about to marry a man with a wonderful, smart, kind 13-year-old daughter. She is a strict vegan because her mother became one in the last year. Although it’s presented to her as a “choice” by her mother, it’s not much of one. The mother doesn’t allow any nonvegan foods. I’m a lifelong vegetarian myself, but I intensely disagree with this diet. His daughter readily admits that she likes eating things like cheeses and cakes but insists on restricting herself, even when she’s at her father’s house and away from her mother. On the rare instances she decides to bend from her diet, she calls her mother beforehand to

ForbesWe've been hearing the word beauty foods a lot lately. But what exactly are they-and what do they actually do? We turned to beauty and health expert Amanda Chantal Bacon, Moon Juice founder and author of The Moon Juice Cookbook, to break down the best foods for getting glowing, clear skin and strong, healthy hair. "What's the best thing to eat if you want healthier skin?" That’s a question I get a lot as a chef and former food editor who’s obsessed with health and wellness. The stop in Friedrichshafen is intended as a layover for passengers traveling to or from the Cologne-Bonn airport. People’s Viennaline offers twice-daily flights with a one-way ticket going for about $40. It might take a while to rack up the frequent-flight miles, however.
