How I reached One Million Page Views on Hubpages

On June 3rd, my hubs hit a major milestone -- over 1,000,000 page views. I've decided that the best way to celebrate this accomplishment is to write about what I've done to get there, what it has meant to my income and what my best tips are to help you reach the same accomplishment if you haven't gotten there yet.

Getting great traffic? Write more hubs on that topic!
1. Capitalize on your Best Performing Topics

When I first joined Hubpages, I really had no idea what I was going to write about, so I published an old journal entry I'd written about my laser disc collection.

Then I put together a hub aboutWatching Fox TV series online. A lot of my favorite tv shows are on the Fox network so I just put together a list of all their shows that you can watch on their website with links directly to that show's video site.

Then I meandered off and spent some time working on other stuff -- probably Squidoo and Ezinearticles and various websites I was working on at the time.

A few weeks later I come back to Hubpages and the Fox tv show hub was getting TRAFFIC! Woot! So I capitalized on that and eventually put together very similar hubs for CBSABC and NBC. To this day all four continue to get decent traffic and I'm always still thinking of ways to expand on the general topic of watching TV online(without promoting scammy and/or illegal methods).

To date, the Fox hub has received over 122,000 pageviews and it is my best performing hub. CBS is a distant 5th with over 45,000 pageviews to date and ABC is not far behind it.

Revenue Potential doesn't always correlate to actual results

What is worth noting as well is that these hubs also perform well for me in terms ofAdsense income despite the fact that they feature low paying keywords. The hub metrics for each of these hubs show a single $ sign under "potential revenue" but these are always in my Top 10 performing hubs every month because they get significantly more traffic than some of my hubs with much higher paying keywords. So you need to balance high paying keywords vs high traffic keywords. They aren't always going to be the same.

In order to determine what your best performing hubs are in terms of Adsense, you will want to set up Adsense url channels for each of your hubs. I believe you can only currently set up 200 channels so if you already have more than 200 hubs, I would set them up for the 200 hubs that get the most traffic and let it be for a few months so you can see what the trends are. Then use that information to create more hubs.

You can always remove the url channel for some of your older hubs in order to track the new ones that you are creating in order to test your theories.

2. Do your Keyword and Topic Research

When I first started with Hubpages I really did not do a lot of keyword research, but I've learned over time that is really helpful. I do my research thinking in terms of overall topics and I don't always worry about getting the exact phrase into my title or url, but they will be liberarly sprinkled through my content and then the importantkeywords and phrases will be bolded.

Google's search suggestions

There are some obvious places to do keyword research, such as Google's Adwords tool. But I also like to use the Yahoo and Google suggest features and find myself using those more frequently.

Both of these search engines give you dropdown suggestions as you start typing in keywords. I like to use them to get ideas for what to write about. For example, if you start typing "How to..." into Google, you will get a dropdown of some of the most popular searches, such as How to Tie a Tie, or -- for a topic I actually used -- How to Cook Asparagus. This is another of my top performing hubs with current traffic fluctuating between 250 and 300 pageviews per day.

Yahoo "Search Assist"

I also have a few places I visit for topics with some potential buzz. Basically I'm looking for hot trends to capitalize on, but I prefer not to go after stuff that's just momentarily newsworthy as it won't see long term traffic.

Some favorite trend trackers I like are BuzzFeed and AOL Hot Searches. Buzzfeed gave me the idea for Japanese Nail Art as a topic. And I believe I picked up How to Cook Butternut Squash from AOL Hot Searches around Thanksgiving last year. The Japanese Nail Art hub has over 20K in hits to date (published 3/29/08) and the Butternut Squash hub sees steady traffic throughout the year (currently avg. 50 hits a day) and then close to Thanskgiving it will spike dramatically upwards.

Use Yahoo Answers to find great topics for hubs

And one other thing I do to find potentially lucrative keywords and topics is check forums.

For example, I'm a big Disney World fan and I visit the park a lot. So do millions of other people every year so it doesn't take much to determine that the world's most popular vacation destination is going to be a winner, but finding the right topics and key phrases can be challenging unless you know what you are looking for.

So instead of just relying on the Adwords tool to feed me keywords, I visit travel forums and Yahoo Answers and look for the questions that are being asked over and over again. And one of the most frequent topics of interest for families planning their Disney vacation is the Walt Disney World Dining Plan. This hub currently averages 50 hits per day and it performs well with Adsense because travel keywords pay well.

So if you have a favorite place you like to visit and know well, it is worth your while to write hubs with travel tips. And if you don't travel that much, try putting together some travel advice for your home town -- just do some keyword research before you start writing.

Ezinearticles sends traffic!
3. Use Article Marketing to Get Traffic to Your Hubs

I cover more extensively in my hub about Article Marketing, so I'll only just touch on it here. I do not do social bookmarking to promote my hubs. Most of the social bookmarking sites were set up with the intent to share cool stuff that you've found online... not self-promotion, so I'm really not comfortable with it. Plus, people who use sites like Digg don't click on ads anyway so why bother. I want performing traffic and that means search engine traffic.

Article marketing, on the other hand, is designed for self promotion. By publishing articles to article directoriesthat include links back to your hubs, you can get backlinks that improve your hub's position in the search engines and you can get traffic directly from the articles themselves. And readers who are arriving from articles perform differently from someone arriving from Digg or Stumpleupon. Someone who traveled to your hub from an article you've written is more likely to be a motivated buyer.

So I strongly recommend at least using Ezinearticles.com as a resource to bring more traffic to your hubs. I do not submit articles for every hub that I create, but once I know I'm on a trend (my Disney hubs, for example) I will write several articles on related topics and submit those with links back to my Disney hubs. And since I've been doing research for my hubs anyway, it does not take much more effort to write extra articles for EZA.

Making Money on Hubpages

I make my full-time income from marketing online and while the majority of my income comes from my own websites, I get a healthy contribution from the hubs I make, probably about 10-15%. I have four main websites and a bunch of other smaller ones that I work on when I'm in the mood.

Right now, virtually all of my Adsense income comes from Hubpages as I have removed it from most of my own websites. Depending on the time of year, Adsense fluctuates between $300-$500 per month. Most months I probably make about $350 or so.

Ebay is another significant part of my earnings, both on Hubpages and on my own sites. At this time of year, I'm averaging about $1K a month on Ebay (closer to Christmas it is at least twice that) and about 10% of that comes from Hubpages. So in the last three months, my hubs have made me about $300 on Ebay. For tips on making the most of Ebay, check my Ebay Affiliate hub

Amazon, unfortunately, I have never cracked. I make enough money on Amazon each month to buy a DVD. Sometimes I make enough to buy a video game :) I know some other hubbers do really well with Amazon, but I just never have so I don't focus on it all that much.

And the rest of my income comes from affiliate programs. I promote mostly physical products and am not in the Make Money Online business at all. The majority of my income comes from various programs on Commission Junction. When I first got into marketing, Clickbank was a significant factor, but now I only have one website that promotes digital products and those ebooks are not related to making money online.

Also, before I set up a website about a topic, I almost always will write a few hubs to test its potential. Consider this another tip if you are looking to expand your empire. Hubs make great testing grounds!

And whenever a topic proves itself as a money maker, then I will go ahead and set up a website and add a few backlinks to it from those hubs that now have a bit of age on them. So if you are ready to take the next step and start your own website, then take a look at your best performing hubs. Those topics will likely offer you the best chances of success with your own site.

Okay, that's it for me. I hope all of this has been helpful and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

And finally, I would just like to thank the Hubpages team for developing such a great website. I am sure that much of my success is due to their work -- keeping the riff raff and spammers away so the search engine will continue to love us, optimizing Adsense placement so we ca make more money, and constantly implementing tools and design ideas that make Hubpages a pleasure to work with. Thanks to you all!

I remember reading your article about article directories way back when I first got started. Funny thing is I took your advice, did that with a few of my articles/hubs, and those are always my top performing hubs! So it definitely works and I've seen it confirmed by other top marketers as well. Ezine really is one of the best because so many go there first to get articles and then use them on their sites. I just really really wish I would have committed more time and effort a few months back when I had more time. I'm trying now, but I can't keep up! But I'm not quitting, I'll keep going, I see my efforts paying off month after month and I keep learning new tips as I go that help. Thanks for sharing and congrats on your milestone, can't wait to get there....

Great hub, Embitca, thanks for sharing this info!  Love your clean writing style, too.

I resisted the social networking sites until recently.  I've signed up for a few of them but seldom use them.  I don't know that it's worth bothering with, but I keep thinking that they can help ripple out awareness and exposure.  At least, I hope.  :)

This is an awesome hub........

embitca 5 years ago from BostonHub Author

Belief, thanks for letting me know that article marketing has been working for you! I know how you feel about there not being enough time. I think last month I submitted all of 2 articles LOL.

Kosmo, article marketing works great for backlinks! Try that :)

Shirley, I think the social networks like Facebook and Twitter are fine. Personally I keep my Facebook account locked down to just my close friends and family so I don't bother them, especially since there is no SEO benefit. I just don't believe that Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit, etc are the place for self-promotion. It really depends what sites we are talking about. Probably the biggest issue though is whether they are really worth the time.

SWN007, you are absolutely right about How To Articles. They don't pay a lot per click so when I'm talking about performance there, I mean traffic.

However, traffic can often = money. Now I only started tracking the url for the asparagus hub this month so I can't tell you long term performance, but this month it has already made $5. Lot of clicks for that $5, but so what .... 5 bucks is 5 bucks. Now one of my timeshare hubs, Royal Holiday Club, has also made $5. On a LOT FEWER CLICKS. I don't like to get into specific numbers, but let's just say the hub does not get a lot of traffic. In fact, it gets very little.

So clearly the trick would be to find a topic that gets tons of traffic and pays high for Adsense, but sometimes it is just easier to get tons of traffic and let Adsense worry about itself. The asparagus hub probably took me about an hour to put together and it gets traffic without any help from me.

But if I only concentrated on competive keywords I'd also be competing for traffic which would mean doing backlink campaigns and writing article after article for Article Directories. I prefer to do that work on affiliate programs that can offer me a big pay-out rather than on Adsense, so that's what I do. But if I just feel like putting a fun, easy to write hub together with some nice evergreen information that I never have to check again (except to remove dead links), then How To hubs are perfect and generally all of them get traffic without any effort.

Sorry to be so long-winded, but I hope it helps explain some of the method to my madness.

Eaglekiwi 5 years ago from NZ-Oceania-USA-

Everyone has already said it all, big thanks from me and I just wanted to add my 2cents worth , guess I had been stressing about keywords and search engines etc etc . I probably tweeked and changed hubs and made them worse . I seem to get 50/50 blue and red triangle behavior, couple of times many blues , then once double red triangles....oh was over the moon. Lately Ive been feeling despondant though ,after what felt like hours ( one hour) ...of writing...at the end of the day I had 70c....oh well back to the drawing board .

Hey its really very unselfish of you to take the time to share all this info so heres to your best life!

embitca 5 years ago from BostonHub Author

Eaglekiwi, patience and time really make a big difference! Right now you have 15 hubs, so give it some time. And work on more hubs :)

If you don't mind, I would like you to try an experiment with one of your hubs -- your Perfect Pumpkin Soup hub. I would recommend changing the title to "How to Make Pumpkin Soup", then change out every place you have written "Perfect Pumpkin Soup" with some of the following key phrases in which ever way they make the most sense:

pumpkin soup recipecanned pumpkin soup recipeclassic pumpkin soupeasy pumpkin soup recipepumpkin soup recipesbest every pumpkin soup

Also add all of these as tags. I have some other ideas as well, so just hit "Contact Embitca" in my profile box if you are interested and let's see what we can do.

I also keep my Facebook account for people I know. But there are some power in the backlinks you can get from some of the social sites. For example, Twitter offers nothing more than mostly followers (and it can inflate you ego LOL) - but one of it's "sister" sites (can't think of the twitter term) Tweetwall gives you do-follow backlinks. I have some info about it in one of my hubs and there are also shortcut social bookmarking tools so you aren't spending a lot of time doing the backlinking. It offers a similar benefit to article marketing in that if people like it, they'll vote for it or some may even send you a link, just like with article marketing. It all depends on what you want to try. It doesn't usually convert into dollars though, but it can help boost SERP positioning because of the backlink juice. I use some of the social bookmarking tools for myself so if I throw something of mine in there every once in a while, I don't think it hurts. Of course not all of them apply, but it gives me a chance to at least make sure tags or keywords are used in the way I want them.

Congratulations on your hub award, one million views and with your success of marketing.

After reading what seems like a million hubs and hundreds of other articles on how to approach getting ranked with adsense, hubpages and more, this is a first for me, where a How I article has suggested, USE article marketing to get traffic and NOT social bookmarking sites to market your articles.

Your consummation and decision about social bookmarking on the internet being about sharing cool stuff seems very logical and is a real bell ringer.  "Readers arriving from articles perform differently then readers from social sites".

Although I have a lot of work to do, this alone is like turning the pages of a brand new ebook and offers a message of hope. After reading this, I considered other writers habits, and know that a lot of good writers social life stinks. Not all, just a lot.

Again, congratulations to you. Im learning that it takes a great performer to get performing traffic.

Wow! Great information on monetizing on ebay and using hubpages as testing grounds for building websites. You do not seem to be relying on Adsense much and I think that is why you are doing so well. Ebay is a monetizing website because it deals almost entirely of products instead of contents. I took notes as if I was back in college and will surely do my homework and try to keep up with the class.

embitca 5 years ago from BostonHub Author

Hi LInda, On Hubpages I make more money with Adsense than I do with Ebay. But you are right that for my overall strategy Ebay is a bigger aspect of my marketing on my own websites. I would eventually like to see my Adsense income grow to roughly the same size as what I get from Ebay every month though. I find that spreading the income sources around allows me to sleep a lot better at night :)

Newsworthy, I think you will find that if you try article marketing, you will get a lot of bang for the buck. Article directories are primarily funneling search traffic. Where Digg traffic is primarily people who hang out on the Digg site talking trash to each other and bouncing from one Digg to the next. So you can immediately see why the behavior is so different.

Belief, I will check out Tweetwall. I have not heard of that before. Thanks for the tip!

And thank you everyone for the copious thanks and congrats. You are all making my ego swell up! *g*

Pretty nice hub with lots of information. But one question: How is that you have only one $ revenue potential? I have a weak hub (still 1st in google) and it gets 5 $$$$$. :D

embitca 5 years ago from BostonHub Author

Is your weak hub an entertainment hub? Almost anything related to entertainment -- tv, movies, and books, will have a weak revenue potential on a "per click" basis. In other words, pennies per click. That was the whole point I was getting at in the screen cap. It doesn't matter. That page gets lots of traffic and makes me money regardless.

Wow, 1 million page views. I can only hope someday to see a fraction of that. With regards to adsense - I have heard rumblings that they may be increasing the number of seperate tracking channels. I hope that's true as it would help.

Excellent information. I know you said in this Hub that you are not in Make Money Online business, but the material in this Hub is so rich, I couldn't help but wonder if it ever occurred to you to make something like an online course out of it. I'd seriously consider becoming a student if you did. Thumbs up in every way.

I wish I had read this fourteen months ago with the rest of the crowd! You are surely on your way to 2 million by now. I very much appreciate all of your advice which is clear, honest, and very practical. I'm going to try your keyword search ideas and branch out from the Google Adwords keyword tool, first to improve the hubs I've already written, then to go on and try some other things. It is humbling to realize how far I have to go, but I'm inspired that you are so successful here! Regards! I am already a fan but am going to bookmark this one.

Wow! Really fantastic. You've done amazingly well! I really hope I can get to where you are. I'm a writer by trade, but have been a stay at home mom the last three years. Hubpages is great for me to get back in the groove of content and article writing, but so far I've only made 1 penny. ONE CENT! I'm definitely doing something wrong.

Hi embitca, great hub. I'm an avid user of E-Zine articles too and I did pretty well on it. Not as well as you though. Just want to ask if your E-zine articles stats have dropped since the algorithm change from google.

embitca 3 years ago from BostonHub Author

Hi Edwin,

I haven't looked to closely because I've been focusing my resources elsewhere the past several months, but I don't think my EZA articles saw too significant a drop. Maybe 25% or so.

Thank you for a well explained hub. A million views is a huge number!

stayingalivemoma 2 years ago from Tempe, Arizona

This is such useful information. I have just started my website and have a wordpress blog, but am thinking of writing on ezine or squidoo because there's no way to monetize my wordpress. I do however create links in my wordpress back to my hubs (as well as other hubbers). Right now, I am getting all my affiliates in place for my website, but I really will try Buzzfeed and AdWords tool as Google has given me an AdWords credit of $100, I'll see how that goes!

Thanks again for the great info. Who knows? I may be linking this article to my website soon once I update it some more. God Bless and congrats on all your success!

As for the various TV network stations, you might also want to include some of the Canadian stations too like CTV, CBC; you would then pick up Canadian readers too.

Great hub. I have submitted a few reviews to ezinearticles, but it's too early to tell as far as the results go. I have been using the social bookmarking and get a small spike in pageviews, but nothing substantial. I'll use some of your tips here and see what happens. Thanks for the great info.

Wanted to thank you for sharing this great info. Going to go read about your ebay income. I do well on ebay using Squidoo, but have earned only from clicks here. (That's better than not earning at all)! Would love to earn more with ebay to reach my HubPages Ad payouts on a monthly basis.

Voted this one up!

New to hubpages and just stumbled on this. Amazing! Great work! And you only have 237 hubs?? That seems impressive to me...

Did you break 7 million?

Amber522 23 months ago

First off, let me also congratulate you on your success with hubpages. I know it had to take a lot of dedication and hard work to get to where you are. I dream of one day being at the same level, and reading hubs like this really motivate and inspire me.

Secondly, I have a question. In this Hub, you gave the advice to write new hubs that are on similar topics to the ones that you have that are doing well. I have one hub that has been consistently doing much better than all my others. It gets anywhere from 300-500 views a day. My second place hub only gets about 60 views a day. I have already taken this advice and written 4 more hubs that relate to or expand on the same topic. However, I have not seen nearly the same results from these articles. I figure I will wait it out and see if they get better as they age, but I was wondering if you have any more advice? Should the keywords be the same? How long do the hubs usually take to start seeing results? Granted they are only 1-3 months old, I assumed I would at least be seeing more than 10 views a day on them by now, especially since I linked them to the hub that is doing really well. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!

petertebin 21 months ago from Maryland
