Types of Ballpoint Pens

If you think you know all you need to know about pens, then listen to this. Did you know that there are many different types of pens in the market today? Some are named on the basis of the kind of tips they have while some others are given names depending on the material they are made of. For example the feather pens are actually nothing more than a feather whose featherless tip is used as the writing end after dipping it in ink. The word pen is derived from a Latin name 'Penna', which means feather.

Let us take a look at the ballpoint pens. They were discovered by Bmrs Laszls Jszsef Biro in the 19th century, but the first pen was patented by John J. Loud on October 20 1888. The pens are made in such a way that they have a reservoir filled with ink of high velocity. There is also a small metallic sphere that rolls away dispensing the ink over onto the writing paper. The ink does not take long to dry and this just makes the pen even more popular.

Over the years, other similar versions of the ballpoint pen have appeared. For example in 1907, 1910 and 1916, there appeared new pens but the problem with them is that they could not spread the ink evenly over the paper. The metallic sphere came with its own share of problems; it was either too large, making the ink leak, or it was too tight, making it block the smooth flow of the ink.

Today, a lot of research has been done on how to go about making effective ballpoint pens. Problems associated with leaking have been eliminated after pioneers like Lazro Biro and his brother came up with creative ideas.
