This is almost unbelievable, but he's been caught in a bald faced lie, starting with his lie to his own mother. From that day forward he has zero credibility and that's an incredibly stupid penalty to pay for trying to unnecessarily engrandize himself. Not only that he cast a palor on the Rio cops and the games. He swims fast but other than that he's a total butthead and a disgrace to the USA.

He blamed it on immature behavior. He is in his 30's, so he really should have tried to act like an adult.He made sure he was out of Brazil very fast, and left the other guys to deal with the lies,etc.Some teammate he turned out to be.No matter where you are from, when you travel to another country, you represent your own country.

Lennie: agree that he is a total sleaze and should not be allowed to compete again. That said - he earned his medals fair and square and should keep them, but be barred from future participation. He paid a stiff fine and, as R. J. Paul says above, we don't and won't know "the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth".

I think given the totality of the circumstances, weighted judgement should probably be in order. If in fact he destroyed a 4 dollar advertisement, then there should be a 4 dollar fine. But the stories from the police and the swimmers keep changing. One thing we do know is that a gun was pulled on him and money demanded from him. I call that armed robbery. I know it's fashionable these days (the last 8 years anyway) to always blame America first and apologize for America being America, but in this case given the evidence, I will side with the American. Oh and just to further annoy those who back the corrupt Brazilian government over our swimmers, the latest medal count is USA 118, Brazil 18. I suppose if the Olympics had an event for extortion, their medal count would be a bit better.

You LIE to your mother, the authorities and everyone involved rather than own up to what you did? Not acceptable. You rrash property that is not your own for what possible reason-DRUNK? I have seen a million drunks over the years and this is a choise they make by this behavior. Not acceptable. He tried to make the host country look bad to cover up his "Ugly American" behavior, if he had been from another country you would not be so dismissive. The U.S. Olympic Committe should not "pay" the $25,000 to Lochte for his gold medal. I didn't realize these athletes get paid for whatever medals they win. The Olympic Committee should take that $25,000 and donate it to Brazil for hosting the Olympics. "All U.S. athletes can earn a “medal bonus” from the U.S. Olympic committee for each medal won. The Committee pays American medal winners 25,000 USD for gold, 15,000 USD for silver, and 10,000 USD for bronze medals.". I don't know if the others won medals, but if so, their money also should be given to Brazil. What stupidity on the athletes' part. They not only embarassed themselves and their families, but this also reflects on the Country.

You didn't mention Trump...Trump is the Republican Presidential Nominee, and has shown his character and actions to be so much worse than Ryan Lochte, and yet Ryan Lochte is the one that has been complelely vilified in the media. I am feeling completely lost now, when it comes to U.S. politics and our media...I take heart though, that most Americans are not represented in this ubsurd pony show!!

You know, it is amazing how many people are on the bandwagon to crucify Ryan Lochte over his lie about being robbed in Rio and not nearly as aggressive on their statements about Hillary Clinton's continual lies being printed almost everyday. He is on the US Swim Team and she is running for the President of the United States. What a screwed up country we live in! Thank you...
