30 Healthiest Foods of All Time 1 to 10 By Dr. Mercola In a survey of at-home spending patterns on food among US households, the Economic Research Service (ERS) of the US Department of Agriculture revealed Americans are throwing a lot of their food budgets toward very unhealthy foods. The average US household spent most of their food budget (nearly 18 percent) on refined grains followed by sugar and candies (at nearly 14 percent). The next highest category was red meat (mostly from concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs), followed by frozen or refrigerated entrees and beverages.1 In stark contrast, Americans spent less than 0.5 percent of their food budget on dark green vegetables and a similar amount on orange vegetables. Other vegetables made up less than 4 percent of at-home food spending and whole fruits just over 6 percent. As reported by Forbes:2 "It is not that shoppers are spending less than they should on food in general. We spend 17 percent of our food shopping dollars on refined grains (more than three times what is recommended). …And while the USDA recommends spending less than 1 percent on sugar and candies, most Americans spend closer to 14 percent of their food budget on sweets. This means that it is in fact not the desire to save money that makes us eat badly, but our own poor choices." I believe it is partly a matter of making good choices and partly a matter of getting educated about which foods are truly healthy. Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to break the bank to eat good food. In fact, many of the healthiest foods that follow are quite economical. Even better, because there are so many healthy foods, you can plan your meals around what's in season… and what's on sale. In order to protect your health, I advise spending 90 percent of your food budgeton whole foods, and only 10 percent on processed foods. Choosing from the list below is a very good start to feeding your family right.

TURTLE THUMBPRINT COOKIES BY LAUREN ALLEN  I know I’m a nerd when it comes to anything food related, but I look forward to Christmas Cookie Exchanges as much as I look forward to Christmas morning!  My mom has attended one with her friends for years, and it’s a tradition I want to carry on each year with my friends!  Last night a few friends and I hosted our first cookie exchange together!  I love seeing the fun variety of cookies that everyone brings, and I, of course, love taking home a little sample of all of them!  My mom would always come home with a huge tub of different cookies. She’d put them in the freezer so that we could take some out each night throughout the holidays and enjoy them for longer.

Why It’s Great to Have a Stubborn Child ...at least in the long term, say studies Donna Gorman Years ago, in preschool, a teacher sent my youngest child, Ainsley, to sit by herself until she was ready to talk about something she’d done wrong. She sat through circle time. She sat through snack time. She sat through recess and story time and music. It wasn’t until lunchtime that she finally decided to talk. The teacher was surprised by her determination. Me? Not so much.

10 Things Your Employees Are Dying to Hear from Yo

10 Things Your Employees Are Dying to Hear from You   Business leaders and owners: What were your last 10 or 15 employee conversations like? Chances are, they included phrases like, “I need you to finish that projection by the end of the day,” or, “I’m putting you on the Brown account,” or, “How much longer do you think it’ll take to finish that PowerPoint the client requested?” As I know from personal experience, you can’t run a business without addressing these types of issues. (And chances are, unless they’re delivered in a, shall we say, forceful tone of voice, your employees don’t mind hearing pertinent instructions and questions.) But as I learned early on in my career, if your conversations with employees don’t include other types of phrases, too, your team’s morale will probably suffer. Let me explain. In the midst of the everyday chaos of running a business, leaders often don’t think about what they could or should say to motivate their employees. Often, those leaders assume that their employees know how they feel—about each person’s individual performance and about the company’s health in general. Usually, though, that’s not the case. They’d never bring it up themselves, but your employees really want to receive affirmation, encouragement, reassurance, respect, and gratitude from you. When you verbalize these things—which takes only a few seconds of your time!—you will notice a big change in your employees’ motivation, commitment, and productivity. Here are ten phrases that got great results for me at Autopart International. If you start incorporating them into your at-work vocabulary, your employees’ engagement will “blossom” this spring: *“I need your help.” Yes, your employees will be looking to you to steer your company in the right direction, but I promise, they know you’re human, and they don’texpect you to have all the answers. So the next time you’re facing a difficult decision or brainstorming options, ask your team for help. Rather than losing respect for you as a leader, they’ll appreciate that you treated them as valued partners—and they’ll feel more invested in your company’s future because they had more of a hand in creating it. *“What do you need from me?” Often, employees are anxious about asking the boss for what they need, whether it’s updated office equipment, more time to complete a project, advice, etc. By explicitly asking what you can

8 Ways Technology Makes You Stupid

8 Ways Technology Makes You Stupid by Rebecca Hiscott People assume that iPhones, laptops and Netflix are evidence of progress. In some ways, that's true. A moderate amount of Googling, for instance, can be good for your brain, and there are apps that can boost brain function and activity. Yet tech advancements also come with some unintended consequences. Our brains being "massively rewired" by tech, says neuroscientist Michael Merzenich in The Shallows: What The Internet Is Doing To Our Brains, a Pulitzer-nominated 2011 book by Nicholas Carr. Merzenich warns that the effect of technology on human intelligence could be “deadly.” That got us thinking. How exactly is technology messing up our brains?

Ebola Drugs Get Closer to Prime Time A rendering of the Niemann-Pick disease, type C1 (NPC1) protein. MAY 26, 2015 10:00 AM ET // BY SHEILA M. ELDRED In the rush for drugs to contain and prevent future epidemics, an international team says it may have a “silver bullet” in developing a therapeutic treatment that would combat several viruses responsible for recent outbreaks, including Ebola, Marburg, Sudan, Bundibugyo and Tai Forest virus. The Ebola epidemic continues to threaten countries such as Guinea, where dead bodies have been transported via public transportation. The demand for both vaccines and therapeutic drugs is glaring. Vaccines entering phase 1 human trials are expected to hit the market first, but the discovery, published today in the online journal mBio, is the forerunner in a therapeutic that could combat all filoviruses that have resulted in outbreaks in Africa.

Food Cravings Are a Sign of Mineral Deficiencies

These Unhealthy Food Cravings Are a Sign of Mineral Deficiencies   1. INTRODUCTION Most of us have, at one point in our lives, experienced intensecravings for unhealthy foods. Whether it be for chocolate, donuts, salty snacks or refined carbs, our bodies appear to want them — and we’re often all too happy to submit. There’s just one problem: Eating these foods doesn’t seem to end the cravings. What is going on here? Are our bodies playing a cruel joke on us? Well, not quite. Science now understands that these cravings are a sign that your body needs certain minerals that can be found in unhealthy foods but are best acquired from whole foods. Indeed, only by acquiring minerals from natural sources, in which all nutrients are optimized for superior absorption, can we hope to finally end the cravings that plague our lives.

7 Insane Ways Music Affects The Body

7 Insane Ways Music Affects The Body (According to Science) The world is chock full of ear hurt that some people willingly refer to as music. The Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga, Conway Twitty; they all produce high quality records and 8-tracks for our enjoyment whether we like it or not. But music--even terrible music--has a stunning amount of power over our bodies. For instance science says music can... #7. Repair Brain Damage Slapping neuroscience right across the face, music is able to take stroke, lesion or other brain-damaged patients who have lost the partial ability to see or speak and return it to them. The Kenny Rogers Effect--not named because it deals with gorging yourself on chicken or replacing your old, grandfatherly face with a shiny new rubber one--takes patients with visual neglect, the inability to recognize half of what they see, and lightens the effects of the damage. Patients who only shave half their face or grab for the right boob at a strip club can now put that dollar bill in the left or right side of her thong. The Gambler never stops being awesome. As long as she's dancing to Kenny Rogers... Patients with left-side brain damage who can no longer speak can find they are able to sing words, often without trouble or training. After that, it's just a matter of time before they're able to speak simple sentences with practice. That may not sound like much, but if you've ever tried to order a side of fries with left-hand only charades you'll understand what a blessing this can be. How Does it Work? Melodic intonation therapy, or singing until you can talk, takes advantage of the fact that language functions are located in the left brain, but music lives over on the right side of the brain. So, when that asshole stroke robs you of your ability to speak, you can train your brain to move those functions to the other side by associating music with language. This essentially rewires a lifetime of growth and an entire history of evolution into meaninglessness interpretations of random head noises from a guy who hasn't shaved his beard since the 70s. Listening to actual non-terrible music has an additional effect, since pleasurable music releases dopamine that simply makes certain parts of your brain function better (particularly if they were damaged before). Dopamine is your brain's natural crack In a nutshell, music gives your brain a massage and fills it with happy chemicals, turning you from a one-eyed mute into an Island in the Stream. #6. Kick an Addiction

25 Inspiring Self-Confidence Quotes   If you have days, weeks, months, or even years when your confidence is low, please know you’re not alone. Whether it’s circumstantial or chronic, low self-confidence impacts all of us at different points in our lives. Even those born with a more positive personality type have times when they doubt their abilities or feel incapable of success. Lacking faith in our abilities, our attractiveness, or our relationship skills is a common theme in the human drama. Life regularly presents us with difficulties and challenges, some of which we’ve carried since childhood. Self-confidence isn’t developed by escaping these difficulties, but rather it’s nurtured and strengthened by the way we respond to these circumstances and how we view ourselves in spite of them. The foundation for self-confidence is embracing your inherent value and capacity for success, even as you recognize you’ll meet challenges and failure along the way. Self-confidence is trusting that ultimately you have what it takes to be who you want to be. Of course we all need support and reminders of this truth. We need something or someone to jar us from our entrenched negative thinking so we can retrain our brains to accept the positive truth about our potential for greatness.

Incredible Metal Sculptures in New Zealand

Incredible Metal Sculptures in New Zealand defy reality and gravity by Milo Summer ‘The majority of my work has more holes in it than substance – it’s about looking through things, not just at things. There’s always an element of surprise.’ These are the words of Kiwi artist Neil Dawson. Dawson’s sculptures seem to defy reality, mostly suspended above urban areas with the sky as a backdrop, they sometimes appear to be whimsical doodles drawn straight on to the real world. Made primarily using aluminium and stainless steel Dawson’s works of art interact effortlessly with the urban areas around them. From geometric shapes to recognisable 3D objects, his suspended sculptures manage to become part of their surroundings while also standing completely alone in empty space. ‘There’s something sanctified about a gallery environment because the works are physically and visually static,’ says Dawson, ‘With public sculpture there’s a real dynamism because it’s constantly changing with the light and the elements’.  White Peaches, Pistachios, Honey and Ricotta

White Peaches, Pistachios, Honey and Ricotta JEFF GORDINIER  YIELD4 servings   TIME10 minutes This recipe is based on a dish from the chef Seamus Mullen of Tertulia in New York. It’s inspired by a Catalan honey-and-cheese dessert called mel i mató, with an unexpected sprinkle of pistachios and fresh peaches. After falling ill, Mr. Mullen changed his diet to focus more on ingredients with anti-inflammatory effects. Many such foods, like stone fruits, often play a central role in the Spanish cuisine he specializes in.

Frankincense Oil The Oil that Can Cure Migraines, Anxiety, Depressions, and Even Cancer Frankincense oil is known as the King of Oils – and it truly deserves this title. I use it daily to promote my health and if I ever had to choose just one oil to have, it would be frankincense. Frankincense has a long history of being used as a prized and precious essential oil. Historically it was used by the Babylonians, Assyrians and Egyptians in religious ceremonies, and as a resin for balms and salves. And of course, the three wise men brought frankincense to the baby Jesus as an offering. Frankincense is taken from Boswellias when it is extracted from the bark of the tree. The milky-white sap will quickly harden to a resin and then be scraped off the tree in the form of pear-shaped droplets. The color and quality of this resin varies greatly, from the highest quality (clear and silvery in color) to the lowest (of a brown-yellow hue). Today, the essential oil, acquired by steam distillation of the resin, is widely used and holds great therapeutic value. The following uses of Frankincense are based upon my own personal experience.

15 Healthiest Foods of All Time

15 Healthiest Foods of All Time   In a survey of at-home spending patterns on food among US households, the Economic Research Service (ERS) of the US Department of Agriculture revealed Americans are throwing a lot of their food budgets toward very unhealthy foods. 1. Avocado Avocados, which are actually classified as a fruit, are low in fructose and rich in healthy monounsaturated fat and potassium, and research has confirmed the avocado's ability to benefit vascular function and heart health. Personally, I eat a whole avocado virtually every day, which I usually put in my salad. This increases my healthy fat and calorie intake without raising my protein or carbohydrate intake by much. Avocados are also very high in potassium (more than twice the amount found in a banana) and will help balance your vitally important potassium-to-sodium ratio. Avocados also provide close to 20 essential health-boosting nutrients, including fiber, vitamin E, B-vitamins, and folic acid. Besides eating them raw, you can use avocado as a fat substitute in recipes calling for butter or other oils. Another boon of avocados—they're one of the safest fruits you can buy conventionally grown, so you don't need to spend more for organic ones. Their thick skin protects the inner fruit from pesticides. 2. Swiss Chard Swiss chard belongs to the chenopod food family, along with beets and spinach. It's an excellent source of vitamins C, E, and A (in the form of beta-carotene) along with the minerals manganese and zinc.3 When you eat Swiss chard, you get a wealth of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. As reported by the George Mateljan Foundation:4 "The range of phytonutrients in chard is even more extensive than researchers initially suspected, and at this point in time, about three dozen antioxidant phytonutrients have been identified in chard, including betalains (both betacyanins and betaxanthins) and epoxyxanthophylls. Many of these antioxidant phytonutrients provide chard with its colorful stems, stalks, and leaf veins." The betalin pigments in Swiss chard (which are also found in beets) support your body's Phase 2 detoxification process, which is when broken down toxins are bound to other molecules so they can be excreted from your body. Swiss chard also contains an important mix of nutrients, including high amounts of both magnesium and vitamin K1, to support your bone health. In addition, Swiss chard contains a flavonoid called syringic acid, which may help regulate blood sugar and provide benefits to those with diabetes, along with kaempferol, a flavonol that may help fight cancer and lower your risk of chronic diseases including heart disease. 3. Garlic Garlic is rich in manganese, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, and vitamins B6 and C, so it's beneficial for your bones as well as your thyroid. It's thought that much of garlic's therapeutic effect comes from its sulfur-containing compounds, such as allicin, which are also what give it its characteristic smell. Other health-promoting compounds include oligosaccharides, arginine-rich proteins, selenium, and flavonoids.5 There is research demonstrating garlic's effects for more than 160 different diseases.6 In general, its benefits fall into four main categories: Reducing inflammation (reduces the risk of osteoarthritis and other disease associated with inflammation Boosting immune function (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiparasitic properties) Improving cardiovascular health and circulation (protects against clotting, retards plaque, improves lipids, and reduces blood pressure) Toxic to 14 kinds of cancer cells (including brain, lung, breast, gastric, and pancreatic) In addition, garlic may be effective against drug-resistant bacteria, and research has revealed that as allicin digests in your body, it produces sulfenic acid, a compound that reacts with dangerous free radicals faster than any other known compound.7 This is one of the reasons why I named garlic as one of the top seven anti-aging foods you can consume. 4. Sprouts

 Donauwellen Cake

Donauwellen Cake This elegant cake is called Donauwellen (“Danube waves”) because the layers tend to form wave patterns; also, it is customary to decorate the frosting with a wavy pattern. In Austria and Bavaria, Donauwellen cake can be found in virtually every bakery along the river. With layers of chocolate, vanilla, cream and cherries, this dessert has it all. INGREDIENTS CAKE BATTER: 3/4 lb margarine 1/2 lb white sugar 7 med whole eggs 1/2 lb all-purpose flour

 Hearty Pumpkin Soup

Pumpkin Soup Once you see the first neighborhood door bearing an Indian corn bouquet, two things tend to come to mind: Halloween and pumpkins. While Halloween is practically a national holiday in America, Europe has joined us in full force. In fact, Halloween is the world’s second-largest commercial holiday after Christmas and each year, from the beginning of October, there are plenty of events and colorful parades taking place throughout Europe. Since Columbus brought the seeds back to the Old World, Europe has embraced the virtues of pumpkin-based cuisine. This quick-and-easy recipe leaves time to add a final flourish of candied walnuts, thyme and thin parmesan shavings over each colorful bowlful.

fruits and vegetables you should be roasting whole

8 fruits and vegetables you should be roasting whole   Credit: Melissa Breyer  There is something magical that happens when a fruit or vegetable is cooked whole. The flavors often lost to peeling, chopping, seeding and so on are instead invited to stay at the party and the whole shebang mingles under the heat to glorious ends. With foods you may be eating raw, roasting can sweeten and intensify the flavors; for foods you might normally cook anyway, cooking them whole makes for a rich toothsome texture and a lovely presentation as well. Plus, the absence of prep work makes these all exponentially easy and cooking whole can increase nutrients and reduce food waste by making otherwise discarded parts taste delicious. Consider the following.   Grapes What? Yes! Roasted grapes are a revelation. Flavor is intensified and texture is concentrated and they are delicious in both savory and sweet dishes; serve them with cheese or salty things or over Greek yogurt or on top of baked goods. Use them as you would a fruit preserves.Oh gosh, roasted cherries, these are the best. They are plump and busting with deep mellow cherry flavor; and roasting them with their pit gives them an almond-y edge. Some of the juice releases and makes a syrup of sorts, and the whole thing is just beautiful! Serve them over ice cream, with yogurt, on pancakes, in place of cranberries on Thanksgiving, in wintry cocktails, with cheese, on cheesecake, or, basically, with anything. So, in the cooked whole tomatoes department there are the traditional whole stuffed tomatoes, which are good, but never really sparked the wow factor over here. But quickly roasting whole cherry or vine tomatoes is a bit different. They're like the gateway fruit to sun-dried tomatoes (if one needed coaxing). They retain much of their juices, but they become both sweeter and more savory, and their texture takes well to a bit of heat.  Kitchen Life of a Navy Wife/CC BY 2.0    The method couldn't be easier: Heat oven to 425F, spread grapes in a single layer on a pan, add a little olive or almond oil, sprinkle with salt or sugar, toss. Cook for just under 10 minutes, until they start to caramelize a bit and the skin begins to split.   Cherries

 Celery Toasts

Celery Toasts This was the first recipe that the chef and writer Gabrielle Hamilton brought to The Times as an Eat columnist for the Sunday magazine in 2016, a snack-tray-sandwich version of a celery-and-fennel salad served at her restaurant, Prune, in the East Village. It calls for thick, white toasted Pullman bread spread wall to wall with unsalted butter, with slices of blue cheese neatly laid on top, below a mound of shaved celery and thinly sliced scallions dressed in garlic, olive oil, lemon juice and salt, and the whole shebang dusted in ground black pepper before being cut in halves or quarters. "The ingredients come from the grocery store," she wrote in her column. "These toasts are not expensive or intimidating, but they are outstanding."
